The second match of the new Mzansi Super League sees the Jozi Stars hosting the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants in what looks like a blockbuster match up at The Wanderers in Johannesburg as both sides look to get their campaigns off to a winning start.
The tournament got underway in fine style on Friday night and much more will be expected on Saturday between two teams who are absolutely full of power but who contain plenty of resources in their bowling attacks.
Jozi Stars
The Jozi Stars will be out to get their season off to a winning start in front of their own fans and if they can begin well they will set themselves up nicely for when they get their international stars back next week. Given the players they will be missing for this match it should be recognised that they are up against it but they still have plenty of match winners in their ranks.
They have plenty of senior players who can still lead the team into something good enough to pick up a win here while those maybe lesser players have the chance to stake a case for a start when they have everyone available. In a way those players can play with a bit of freedom and make a name for themselves which could make them dangerous.
Nelson Mandela Bay Giants
If there is a side who look to have it all it is the Nelson Mandela Bay Giants. They have an excellent mix of experienced South Africans and good overseas players and they have tons of power with the bat and a really good bowling attack with plenty of options. I always think these franchise tournaments can be won and lost on the strength of your home players and the Bay Giants look good in that regard.
Like everyone in the tournament, the Bay Giants will be missing one or two players to international duty this weekend but they look to have prepared for that and should still be putting out a strong side capable of winning this match. Their spin twins will look to lay down an early marker in the tournament straight out of the traps.
Team News
Jozi Stars will be missing the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Reeza Hendricks and Dwaine Pretorius but they were given a major boost with Chris Gayle declaring himself available for the first weekend of the tournament. Dane Vilas skippers the side.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Giants will be without Chris Morris for this match but with Imran Tahir and Aaron Phangiso around they won’t be easy to score against. Jason Roy and Ben Duckett could make their debuts.

Betting
I had it in my mind not to get involved in the match betting in this tournament until we’ve seen everyone has played a match and until the international players are back and I’m going to stick to that plan here and head to the side markets for a bet on the game.
We all know by now that the boundaries are tiny at The Wanderers and the ball flies further and while both bowling attacks look decent enough there is so much power on show that I still expect 13.5 sixes to land here. We have Chris Gayle, Dan Christian, Rassie van der Dussen, JJ Smuts, Jason Roy, Heino Kuhn and Ben Duckett swinging from the hips for us here. They can all combine for at least 14 sixes.
