2018 World Grand Prix Darts – Day 1 Betting Preview

The opening night of the World Grand Prix sees the top half of the draw playing their first round matches as the competition gets underway in some style at the CityWest Hotel in Dublin on Sunday evening.

Among the players on show on the first night are the world number one Michael van Gerwen, the World Matchplay winner Gary Anderson and the defending champion Daryl Gurney on a star studded schedule.

First Four Matches

The action begins with the World Matchplay semi-finalist Jeffrey de Zwaan and Kim Huybrechts going at it. Ron Meulenkamp then takes on Joe Cullen for a place in the second round before the former world champion Stephen Bunting takes to the stage. He goes up against the gritty Darren Webster before we reach the halfway mark of the evening when ‘Rapid’ Ricky Evans takes on the legend Raymond Barneveld.

Later Four Matches

It is Dave Chisnall who gets the second half of the evening underway when he takes on the German superstar Max Hopp. They are followed by the defending champion Daryl Gurney. He faces John Henderson in what looks like a good clash. Another Irishman follows them when Steve Lennon takes on the world number one Michael van Gerwen and the evening draws to a close when Gary Anderson faces Jonny Clayton in another juicy looking battle.

Betting

We’ve seen throughout the years that anything can happen in the first round of this tournament and as such I’m keeping bets to a minimum in this first round and following the form and a little bit of experience. I’m going with experience in the opening bet as Stephen Bunting looks a good price to see off Darren Webster. Bunting is a former semi-finalist here and ran Peter Wright close last year in the first round. Webster has never won a match on this stage and I think he could struggle again here. I’ll go with the former world champion here.

We saw Dave Chisnall look right off his game at the Champions League of Darts last weekend and since then Max Hopp has stormed to a Players Championship title in Dublin so he should be absolutely brimming with confidence heading into this one and with all the pressure on Chisnall to perform having made the semi-final here two years ago the German could be the looser thrower and use that to his advantage. You can never truly rely on Chisnall on his doubles so Hopp looks a great price.
