There is one match in the Premier League on Sunday as one of the biggest rivalries in the English game plays out another chapter at Old Trafford as Manchester United take on Liverpool in a big game for both sides.
Recently it has been United who have been the dominant force going into the match but that is no longer the case and so Liverpool will be looking to put their rivals to the sword and keep their perfect record intact in the process.
Manchester United
It has been a very ordinary beginning to the campaign for Manchester United. While the case can be made that they might have had more points had they not missed a couple of penalties, the fact they needed to score those penalties to win those matches is a sign of the decline that they have suffered. Their defeat to Newcastle United before the international break intensified the pressure on them so they need to come out fighting here.
You would think that the fact this game is so big would get a performance out of this United side, and we saw at the start of the season when they beat Chelsea that they can counter attack effectively at home, but that feels like a long time ago. One thing is for sure, if they can get something out of this game it will lift the gloom a little and give them a platform to build from once again.
Liverpool
It says everything about how good this Liverpool side is that they have a 100% record this season despite being nowhere near their best for much of it. There is no hiding some of the fortune that they have had but the old saying is that you earn your luck, so maybe we shouldn’t be too critical of them. This might well be their biggest test so far but you get the feeling they will be prepared for it and will relish it.
In saying that it would be wise to remember last season when Liverpool seemed cautious to go for the jugular on this ground despite having plenty in their favour. You would hope they have learned their lesson from that, and if they have that spells trouble, but if they haven’t it would be a concern. All eyes will be on the Liverpool attacking trio to see if they can light up Old Trafford with their quality.
Team News
Manchester United have ruled Paul Pogba and David de Gea out of their side for this match through injury but there is a chance that Anthony Martial will return to the squad for the contest. Jesse Lingard is a doubt.
Liverpool are expected to recall goalkeeper Alisson Becker after the Brazilian stopper confirmed on his Instagram account that he is back in training after suffering an injury on the opening day of the season.
Betting
This is a very tricky match for us punters it has to be said. Liverpool saw their price plummet when it was announced that Pogba and de Gea would miss this match and it might be that they are plenty short enough here. Manchester United were injury ravaged last season and had to make all their subs early on and still held out for a 0-0 draw and as unhelpful as their injury situation is they are not in that sort of despair.
If we look at form this season then United have beaten Chelsea 4-0 and held Arsenal 1-1 here while although Liverpool have won all of their away matches this term Chelsea is the only likely top half side they have played and in three of the four they could easily have slipped up. I think there is enough evidence to suggest that the 1.85 on United with a 0.75 Asian handicap advantage is the way forward here.
