The second weekend of action in the Premier League kicks off with a seven match card on Saturday, one where we see three of the top four from last season in action on what should be a very good day of football.
As ever these days there are three kick off times over the course of the day and with one of the big clashes of the season to round it all off, we are all set up for a great day in the leading division even this early in the campaign.
Early Kick Off
The action gets underway at the Emirates Stadium where Arsenal play host to Burnley in a match where both sides will be looking to build on victories in the opening weekend. It is well-known that Arsenal have won the last nine meetings between the two but after that win over Southampton last week, there is a genuine case for Burnley having little or nothing to lose in this one which could make them a little dangerous. Arsenal will want to impress here.
3pm Matches
We have five matches in the usual 3pm slot with some interesting fixtures among them. Two of the three promoted sides play their first home matches back in the Premier League. Aston Villa welcome Bournemouth to Villa Park while Norwich City take on Newcastle United at Carrow Road.
There are some key games elsewhere with Brighton and Hove Albion taking on a side who got battered last week and who will want to respond in West Ham United while Southampton will be looking to get off the mark when they take on a potentially jaded Liverpool outfit after their UEFA Super Cup exploits. The other match sees Everton taking on Watford at Goodison Park.
Late Game
We save the best for last in the Premier League on Saturday with the champions Manchester City taking on Tottenham Hotspur. These two sides will know each other well after their exploits in the Champions League last term. Spurs came out on top over the two legs of that tie but it is the champions of England who will be warm favourites to win here against a Spurs side who are carrying a few injuries.
Betting
I like two bets over the course of the day with the first of those being on Norwich City. I was really impressed with them against Liverpool last week. They took a hiding on the scoreboard but it was anything like that in reality and on another day they could have gone to Anfield and scored four themselves which takes some doing. I’ve been expecting Newcastle to struggle since Rafael Benitez left and I saw nothing last week to change my mind. They left it too late to get Steve Bruce in and he isn’t exactly a brilliant manager at this level anyway. Signings also arrived fairly late so if Newcastle are any good at all it will come later in the season. They looked well off the pace last week. Norwich will be amped by their first home game back in the top flight and against a goal shy Newcastle side they have an ideal chance to pick up three big points.
I think we saw last week that Brighton and Hove Albion are going to be a lot more offensive this term and that should lead to a good betting opportunity on both teams to score when they entertain West Ham United at the Amex Stadium. The Hammers took a right beating last week but there is a genuine case for suggesting that their season begins here because there won’t be many taking three points off City this season. West Ham made a lot of positive attacking signings ahead of the campaign and they get the chance to shine with the ball here. I think both teams can find the back of the net in this one.
