Big Matches
We have two matches to enjoy on TV on Saturday afternoon and the push for promotion is very much the storyline behind both of them. The action begins at Deepdale where Preston North End take on Cardiff City in a clash between two sides who have eyes firmly on the top six. Then comes the real big match of the afternoon as Leeds United in second place host Fulham who are down in fourth place after Brentford’s start to the return of the competition.
Best of the Rest
Things are getting tense down the bottom end of the table and Neil Warnock will be looking for three points in his first match as Middlesbrough manager to drag his new side out of the bottom three. They travel to Stoke who are nowhere near safe themselves. Luton fell to the bottom last week and they’ll look to come off it when they travel to Wales to take on a Swansea City team who hit the ground running last week. Barnsley are the other side in the bottom three and they host play-off chasing Millwall. Hull City will look to arrest their freefall when they travel to Birmingham City while Charlton Athletic are the other team in danger in action on Saturday. They host London rivals QPR.
Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets on Saturday with the first of them being on Derby County to see off a pretty ordinary Reading side who are nothing special and who aren’t really playing for anything now. I’m always keen to take those sorts of sides on and with Derby reviving their promotion hopes with three successive wins either side of the shutdown, the Rams look a good team to do it with, especially at odds against. Only Brentford and Fulham have a better home record this season than Derby which may well be significant. Derby have a lot of youngsters in their side who can play with a bit of freedom and make it four straight wins at a surprisingly good price.
The other side I like at a shorter price are Birmingham City who host a Hull City side who are in a right mess. The papers haven’t fallen short on covering the mess the Tigers are in right now and they must be wondering where their next win is going to come from having not tasted victory at all in 2020 yet. Key players have either turned their back on the club or aren’t available anymore and Hull’s season has completely fallen apart at the seams. Birmingham haven’t pulled up any trees but they held West Brom last week and nearly nicked it late on. They should have enough in them to come out on top here.
