After the thrills of midweek, the Championship returns for another match day on Saturday with the majority of the teams playing in big matches which could shape the finale of the campaign, which is now in everyone’s sights.
We have 11 matches in all on Saturday with the action beginning with a televised game as ever before the meat and potatoes of the day gets going at the regular starting slot. There is a lot on the line over these games.
Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated)
Hull City v Leeds United (12.30)
Blackburn Rovers v Swansea City
Cardiff City v Brentford
Fulham v Preston North End
Huddersfield Town v Charlton Athletic
Luton Town v Stoke City
Millwall v Bristol City
Queens Park Rangers v Birmingham City
Reading v Barnsley
Sheffield Wednesday v Derby County
West Bromwich Albion v Wigan Athletic
Big Matches
The televised offering comes from the KCOM Stadium where a Hull City side who are in freefall will look to halt their skid when they host a Leeds United side who could put eight points between them and the pack chasing that top two spot for a few hours should they come out on top. There is also a big game at The Hawthorns where the leaders West Brom will be eyeing up another win when they host Wigan Athletic, for whom a win will see them come out of the bottom three until Monday night at the very least.
Best of the Rest
It is a massive day down at the bottom of the table. Bottom of the lot Luton Town host a Stoke City side who could be reeled right into trouble should they lose the game while Reading, themselves teetering on the edge of danger, welcome Barnsley to the Madejski. Two other teams who are anything but safe meet at the John Smith’s Stadium when Huddersfield Town host Charlton Athletic. At the other end of the table two teams in the top six meet at Craven Cottage as Fulham host Preston North End while the other team in the playoff spots, Brentford, head to Cardiff City.
Betting
I’ll go with the one bet which comes at the Madejski Stadium where Reading have to be taken on. I accept they rested a couple of key men in midweek but you can’t be losing 3-0 to Wigan Athletic on your own patch and not suffer some fallout from the game. That wasn’t only a poor performance but it was a terrible result and if it lingers they are anything but safe. I think they could be vulnerable against an improving Barnsley outfit.
It has taken a while for the penny to officially drop for Barnsley this term but they look like they are on the right track at the minute with three straight wins, all of which have come without them conceding a single goal. It is never easy to travel twice in three days but their match on Wednesday was local enough that I hope that won’t be an issue. If it isn’t we have Barnsley on a high against a stuttering Reading outfit and I fancy the visitors can get something from the contest.
