The festive fixture list in the Championship concludes on Friday night when the last two matches of the latest round of games take place, where there is expected to be a second tier debut for one of the finest players England have ever produced.
Wayne Rooney could make his first start for Derby County in one of the two fixtures that are on show on Thursday, a night where the lower end of the table is in the spotlight after the other end shone on Wednesday.
Derby County vs Barnsley
The pick of the two matches is undoubtedly the one which comes from Pride Park as England legend Rooney is expected to wear the Rams’ number 32 shirt for the first time. He and his new teammates will take on a Barnsley side who look to be on the up under a new manager bounce.
Derby picked up a much needed victory over Charlton Athletic on Monday night and will be looking to build on that here but Barnsley are suddenly undefeated in five and will move to within goal difference of coming out of the relegation zone should they come out on top here so they certainly don’t lack for motivation for this one. I’ve gone on record as saying I don’t rate this Derby side one bit so it will be interesting to see what improvement they show with Rooney in their ranks.
I’m expecting to see goals here. I actually expected the line to be a little inflated in line of Rooney making his debut so I’m encouraged that it hasn’t been the case. Derby looked more solid defensively against Charlton but the dismissal of Kristian Bielik and the subsequent chasing around with 10 men for 75 minutes could have an impact here. Only Luton and QPR have shipped more goals than Barnsley this term so this one really should have over 2.5 goals in a match both will feel they can get something from.
Swansea City vs Charlton Athletic
The other match on show on the night comes from the Liberty Stadium as Swansea City host Charlton Athletic in a match where both sides will be looking for points for different reasons, despite beginning the season well.
Swansea return to the top six with a victory here while Charlton are having to look right over their shoulders all of a sudden despite their fine start to the campaign. The injuries the Addicks are having to contend with are well documented but they are going to hamper them here you would imagine. Swansea are going well at the minute but they are not perhaps as convincing as their results suggest. I can’t back Charlton with their injuries and Swansea look too short to me so I’m happy to sit this one out.
