We are heading towards the closing stages of the Championship season and we take a step closer to that stage this midweek with another round of fixtures in what is becoming a compelling campaign at the top and bottom of the league.
The midweek action begins with five matches on Tuesday evening, all of which can be seen on Sky, either on the main channel or behind the red button, so there is no reason to miss out on any of the football over the night.
Tuesday’s fixtures are as follows: (7.45pm unless stated)
Cardiff City v Nottingham Forest
Huddersfield Town v Bristol City
Luton Town v Brentford
Queens Park Rangers v Derby County
West Bromwich Albion v Preston North End (8pm)
Preview
Both the top and the bottom of the table are in the spotlight on Tuesday evening, not least in the last match to kick off where the leaders West Bromwich Albion will look to open up a seven point gap between themselves and Leeds United at the top of the table and extend their advantage over third placed Fulham. They host Preston North End who could end the night in third if they win. Brentford will be looking to move into that spot themselves when they head to bottom of the table Luton Town while Nottingham Forest can also end the night in third depending on their result when they go to Cardiff City.
Bristol City are flirting on the edges of the play-off places and hoping for a slip up from at least one of the three sides above them. If that comes they could move into the top six should they overcome a Huddersfield Town side who are looking worryingly over their shoulders now. The other match sees QPR hosting Derby County in a clash where both sides look to be safe enough at the present time and a win will only further guarantee that.
Betting
I’ll go with just the one bet across these five matches and it comes in the one that I am going to at Kenilworth Road, where not surprisingly I’m expecting to see a number of goals. Brentford scored seven of them in the reverse fixture but Luton Town have rarely had an issue finding the back of the net and the Bees have started leaking since Pontus Jansson has left the team through injury. He could be available here but you wouldn’t think he would start this one over the match at Cardiff at the weekend.
Luton’s plight is such that shutting up shop and playing for a draw is of no use to them and that is a dangerous place to be in because they know all too well how dangerous the Brentford BMW is when it is on song. Luton themselves are decent going forward so this is one of those matches where goals should flow quite naturally. Given all that, I’m a little surprised that the goal line for this one is 2.75. That looks low to me given the attacking quality on show and the defensive frailties both teams have.
