Milos Raonic and Dominic Thiem are already in the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells and on Friday we will find out who will join them when the quarter finals in the bottom half are played out in the opening Masters 1000 event of the year.
You get the feeling that the action on Thursday was the warm up for the main course on Friday, where Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will be on court looking to set up a sensational semi-final showdown.
Hubert Hurkacz vs Roger Federer
The first of the quarter finals on the main court on Friday sees the Polish unknown Hubert Hurkacz looking to cause one of the biggest shocks ever at Indian Wells when he takes on Roger Federer for a place in the semi-final.
These two have had very different paths into this match with Hurkacz going the distance in every round since the first one while Federer is yet to drop a set on his way to this last eight clash. Federer is going to win this based on all known form and statistics but how easily he wins remains to be seen. I’m in no rush to bet on the match though.

Karen Khachanov vs Rafael Nadal
The last of the quarter finals looks like being the most competitive of them as the rising Russian star Karen Khachanov goes up against the Spaniard, Rafael Nadal, who has looked in ominous form throughout the competition so far.
Nadal has dropped just 13 games on the road to this quarter final and although you could argue he hasn’t faced anyone of note yet, there is no doubt that he is playing aggressively, hitting the ball well and putting his opponent under pressure. To be fair though Khachanov has hit the ball well and is racking up a number of winners.
Nadal has a 5-0 head-to-head lead over the Russian but when they met in New York last year Khachanov had his chances to win, eventually going down 75 57 67 67. In Canada the first set went to a tiebreak too so Khachanov seems to like the match up now and that can see him competitive enough to being the over 20.5 games in.
