The first round of the ATPP Miami Open is due to conclude on Thursday on what is a busy day of tennis out in Florida after rain has had a major say in proceedings in the early part of the week out at the Hard Rock Stadium.
We saw some great tennis on Wednesday and although we have to wait until later in the week for the seeded players to take to the court, we still have some good looking matches on the card on Thursday.
Stadium Court
It is a women’s match that gets the action underway but when the men take to the Hard Rock Stadium court there will be a first round clash between the wildcard Christopher Eubanks and Damir Dzumhur. Two more women’s matches follow them but then comes the main match in the first round of the men’s draw when Sam Querrey goes up against David Ferrer in the night session to close the action inside the stadium.
Grandstand
Unlike on the main stadium, the men get the show up and running on the Grandstand court when American player Tennys Sandgren takes on the qualifier Alexander Bublik for a place in the second round. They are followed by a WTA match but then comes the tasty clash between Feliciano Lopez and Benoit Paire which should be a great watch. There is one more men’s match on this court which sees Ernests Gulbis taking on one of the stars of Indian Wells in Miomir Kecmanovic to round off the day.
Court 1
British eyes will be on the third court from the off on Thursday when Cameron Norrie looks to make up for a poor show in Indian Wells when he takes on Jordan Thompson. A women’s match concludes after them and then comes the heldover match from Wednesday when Maximilian Marterer goes up against Taylor Fritz. Joao Sousa then begins his campaign when he plays the Chinese Taipei wildcard Chun Hsin Tseng before the final first round match on this court sees Reilly Opelka going up against the form man Jan-Lennard Struff.
Best of the Rest
With the backlog in matches after all the rain there are men’s matches taking part across the newly formed complex on Thursday. Leonardo Mayer, Robin Haase, Matthew Ebden and Ivo Karlovic are some of the stars on show while Jeremy Chardy against Nicolas Jarry should be a great match. British eyes will be on Dan Evans who has landed himself with a lucky loser slot after his defeat in qualifying on Wednesday.

Betting
With more than 20 matches on the schedule on Thursday there is plenty to get stuck into but I’m going to restrict myself to three bets to follow on from Wednesday’s winner. The first of them comes in the form of Jan-Lennard Struff who was good to me last week and who will hopefully be good for me here too. I think the slower courts here will give him a real advantage against Reilly Opelka. The big serve of the American will be negated by conditions and when these two get into rallies you would think that the German will prevail a lot of the time. I’m surprised Struff isn’t shorter than he is to be honest but I’ll happily take him at the price.
Miomir Kecmanovic has started the year pretty well. He made the quarter finals last week and while his detractors will suggest he had a kind draw and won his last 16 match via a withdrawal from his opponent, he still played decent tennis when he was on the court. Leonardo Mayer, Maximilian Marterer and Laslo Djere have been victims of his this year and I fancy Ernests Gulbis will be another. There is just no consistency to the Latvian these days. He lost in the first round to Alex Bolt in Indian Wells and then went to Phoenix for the challenger event last week and lost his first match in that too. I reckon the Serb can see him off here.
My final bet comes on the stadium court where David Ferrer can roll back the years in conditions that should suit when he takes on a Sam Querrey who isn’t really going anywhere at the minute. The American won his Indian Wells opener against Matteo Berrettini but he needed three sets to win that and the form hasn’t exactly been franked since then. Ferrer is winding his career down but the fact he has accepted a wildcard into this tournament suggests he fancies it so at odds against I think this is a good chance for the Spaniard to set up one last top level clash on US soil with the winner facing Alexander Zverev in the next round over the weekend.
