NFL 2019 – Pittsburgh Steelers @ Los Angeles Chargers Tips and Betting Preview

The final match of a long day of action in the NFL on Sunday sees the Los Angeles Chargers hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers in a Sunday Night Football which is pretty big for the home side in particular.

Both these sides go into the match with a losing record so immediately it is not the highest profile SNF there has ever been but the Chargers could yet launch a run that gets them into the playoffs. Even at this stage that looks beyond Pittsburgh.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers have had an inconsistent start to the season. They began it well with a win over the Indianapolis Colts on the opening round of the campaign but have only beaten Miami Dolphins since then and that isn’t exactly anything to shout about. That win was the only time since the first week that they have posted more than 20pts with the concern being that even an indifferent Denver side posted 20 on them last week.

Injuries have been a big reason for the struggles of the Chargers so they will be pleased that there is a chance Hunter Henry could return to the team for this one. The other obvious issue has been the holdout of Melvin Gordon although he did at least return last week and will hope to have a better impact here. Statistically the Chargers have the tenth best defence in the league and they’ll need that to come good in this one.

Pittsburgh Steelers

At 1-4 for the season which includes a win and a defeat in the division you would think that the race is run as far as the Pittsburgh Steelers making anything resembling a competitive season is concerned. Sometimes there would be hope of making something of it from there but with all their injuries that has to be considered near enough an impossibility. That might just free them up to play some decent football and make some good plays.

In fairness the season was probably over when Ben Roethlisberger went down and when you consider that his back up, Mason Rudolph is out here the size of the task is highlighted further. There are playmakers on both sides of the ball for the Steelers but there aren’t many sides who get the job done on the road with a third choice quarterback so that would be a concern for their chances for me.

Betting

It kind of goes without saying given their records, that neither side are really delivering the goods this season and one reason for that is the amount of points they have been shipping. I see that trend continuing here if I’m honest. When Denver are putting up 20pts on a side you know there is an area of weakness and although Pittsburgh are down to their third choice quarterback, to be fair to them they are still scoring points.

You would think both sides will raise their game for being on national television so the likes of Keenan Allen and Juju Smith-Schuster should have big enough games for the points to rack up quite freely here. Los Angeles Chargers might have to turn this into a shootout if their defence doesn’t deliver the goods because they have to win here. There is enough to make me think that we’ll go over 41.5pts here.
