The second Masters 1000 event comes to a close on Sunday evening when the final of the ATP Miami Open takes place inside the Hard Rock Stadium takes place as John Isner plays host to Roger Federer for the title.
Isner is looking to achieve the remarkable feat of defending the Miami title while Federer will go in search of a fourth victory in Miami with both men looking to be the first winner of the tournament in its new venue.
John Isner
It has been quite a remarkable run to the final for John Isner as he looks to keep hold of the title. He has played eight sets this week and has used all but one game in them with seven tiebreaks and a 75 set his path to this Championship match. What has been impressive is the way that he has not over strived as he has attempted to defend the biggest title of his career to date.
The other thing that I have been impressed with about the American in this tournament is the amount of rallies he has gotten himself into. We know all about his serve, which is actually negated a little by the horribly slow conditions on show here, so he has had to get into return games, if for no other reason than to keep his opponents honest. He’s done that pretty well.
Roger Federer
It is fair to say that Roger Federer was not impressed with losing the Indian Wells final and he has taken out his frustration on four players this week in an amazing blitz of some of the finest tennis we’ve seen for a while, action which has completely gone against the tough conditions that this tournament has been played in. One more such performance and this should be a coronation of his greatness.
Federer has moved with grace, hit his spots with almost every shot he has played and has looked a million dollars. It isn’t like he has had the draw go his way either having taken care of Daniil Medvedev, Kevin Anderson and Denis Shapovalov in the last three rounds. He hasn’t dropped a set in any of those matches and hasn’t been remotely troubled either.
Head-to-Head
These two have met on seven occasions in the past with Federer winning in five of those meetings. Isner did win their last battle though although that was in Paris as far back as 2015. Mind you, he will feel that he is a better player now and maybe Federer was better back then so that would give the American half a chance. It is 4-1 to Federer on a hard court though so everything is in the Swiss’ favour here you would think.

Betting
Roger Federer might have lost the final at Indian Wells but I don’t see him losing this match and if I’m honest I don’t really expect John Isner to be very competitive against him in these conditions other than the fact he has a monster serve. Clearly this isn’t going to be the 60 or 62 sets he has had in the previous rounds but one break of serve a set isn’t unlikely.
The only decision to make here is which market to play the final. I’m a little concerned that Isner will hold serve easier than a couple of Federer’s opponents this week which might scupper the total games and the handicaps so with that in mind I’ll play relatively cautiously and just take advantage of the 4/5 on Federer to win 2-0. I think that is the most likely outcome in this final.
