The Mzansi Super League continues on Wednesday and it does so with a very important match in the race for the playoff spots, as we enter the final week of the regular season with the Paarl Rocks hosting the Durban Heat.
Boland Park plays host to a couple of form teams, with the home side looking for the win which will secure them a postseason berth and the away team wanting to come away with a victory which will catapult them right into the mix.
Paarl Rocks
The Paarl Rocks seem to have an issue when it comes to playing against the Tshwane Spartans because they have beaten everyone else they have got on the field against yet lost to the Centurion outfit twice. Those defeats have not derailed them in any way, and the Rocks know that if they win their last two matches of the season, there is every chance they will whizz straight into the final courtesy of topping the table.
One of the reasons for the good overall success of the Paarl unit is that their bowlers have generally kept things tight enough, helped of course by the big surface at Boland Park. The other good thing they have shown is a number of form batsmen and just as importantly, good depth to their batting, so they are ticking a lot of boxes. They have won a couple of games under pressure as well, which I never think is a bad thing at this stage of a competition.
Durban Heat
With the weather and then injuries not helping them, it took an absolute age for the Durban Heat to come to the party in the Mzansi Super League this term. They look to have arrived now though and will be hoping their emergence in it has not come too late. Although they head into this contest sat in fifth place in the table, they could close in on third with a win here and their last two matches are against the hapless Jozi Stars.
You would think that if they are going to push on and make it into the playoffs then their bowlers are going to have to tighten things up a little. It is rare that a side can keep on conceding in excess of 175 and keep on winning, especially when the crunch games come along, but worryingly for the rest, their batting line up is all beginning to fire as one, and that is very much a warning sign for the remainder of the competition.
Betting
The total runs market isn’t one which has served me well in this competition to date but I’m stilling to give it another go here because the line is relatively low, particularly when we factor this Durban Heat bowling attack into the equation. The runs line here is 312.5, which doesn’t even need a pair of scores in the 160 bracket to have this covered and I’m pretty confident we’ll get that.
Only one regular member of this Durban Heat attack is not going at more than eight-an-over, which of course equates to 160 over a whole innings, and while the Paarl Rocks bowling unit is much tighter over the course of the campaign, it has been taken apart a couple of times in recent outings as well, so those statistics could be dated. We have two good, deep and in form batting line ups on show here and I expect them to combine for more than 312.5 runs.
