2019 US Open Tennis – Day 4 Tips and Betting Preview

The rain severely impacted the schedule at the US Open on Wednesday which means the tournament will be playing catch up on Thursday with all but nine of the second round matches to be played on a hectic day of action in New York.

Not a single match on the outside courts were able to be played on Wednesday so they have been added to Thursday’s card which means that the likes of Rafael Nadal, Naomi Osaka and Simona Halep join the likes of Jo Konta, Daniil Medvedev and Stan Wawrinka on a quality schedule.

Day 3 Recap

Just the nine matches were played with the action rooted to the main show courts. There were comfortable wins for Madison Keys, Elina Svitolina and Karolina Pliskova but Roger Federer and Kei Nishikori were taken to four sets before they made it into the last 32 of the tournament. The night session yielded comfortable wins for Novak Djokovic and Ash Barty while Serena Williams had to come from a set down to make it through.

Two of the four bets we put up were pushed back to Thursday but two did take place. We had no joy with Venus Williams who wilted from 3-0 in the second set to lose in straight sets while it was a bad night for us too with the Reilly Opelka match being moved to the night session which changed the dynamic of it completely. He was well beaten so our bet lost as a result.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

The match that I thought would be the night session one gets us going on Ashe on Thursday when the sixth seed Alexander Zverev takes on the American player Frances Tiafoe in the one men’s match on the day. The women’s match in the day sees the Wimbledon champion Simona Halep taking on another American outsider in the form of Taylor Townsend in what has the potential to be a great match.

It is the former finalist Caroline Wozniacki who gets the honour of starting off the singles in the night session. She takes on one of our tournament bets in the form of yet another American player Danielle Collins. There is no American on show in the men’s match in the night session however. That sees the number two seed Rafael Nadal taking on the Australian hotshot Thinasi Kokkinakis.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

It is the former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova who gets the action up and running on the Luis Armstrong Stadium court. She meets Andrea Petkovic for a place in the third round before the world number one Naomi Osaka takes centre stage again. She faces the Bronx Open winner of last week in Magda Linette. The day session finishes with a powerful looking match between the American number one John Isner and the German player Jan-Lennard Struff.

It is the teenage sensation Coco Gauff who gets the night session underway on this court. She faces off with the Hungarian veteran Timea Babos before the 2014 champion Marin Cilic is back on court. He has seen a number of seeded players leave his half of the draw already so he will be desperate to make it through against the largely unknown German player Cedric-Marcel Stebe who could be heavily out of his comfort zone.

Grandstand

We get into the matches which should have been played on Wednesday now as we begin the action with Sofia Kenin taking on Laura Siegemund before Daniil Medvedev takes on Hugo Dellien for a place in the third round. Two clean hitters of a ball are up third on this court as Jelena Ostapenko meets Alison Riske before the controversial Nick Kyrgios gets the chance to round off the action on this court. He faces the unknown French player Antoine Hoang.

Court 17

The match between Alison van Uytvanck and Qiang Wang which managed to complete one game in the short space of time that there was play on this court on Wednesday will conclude first up on Thursday before the former winner Stan Wawrinka steps up to take on Jeremy Chardy. Belinda Bencic continues to bring the star quality to a really good looking schedule on this court when she meets Alize Cornet before the entertainer that is Gael Monfils rounds off the play. He goes up against Marius Copil to end the action.

Best of the Rest

With the amount of matches being played to catch up on Thursday we have some big names on show on the outside courts. Jo Konta and Bianca Andreescu will be out on Court 5 while Donna Vekic and Fernando Verdasco compete on Court 10. Kiki Bertens is the main draw on Court 13 while David Goffin and Benoit Paire are now among those on Court 6. Aryna Sabalenka and Diego Schwartzman are both on Court 7 and there are a number of other seeded players and big names on the other courts so those with a ground pass for Thursday and see some good tennis.

Men’s Betting

I’ll go with the one bet in the men’s draw on Thursday and it comes in the form of Jan-Lennard Struff who I think has the sort of all-round game which can see off John Isner. We’ve seen throughout this tournament already that the big serves are being negated. Nicolas Jarry lost in the first round and Reilly Opelka went on Wednesday evening and while Isner is better than both of those, I’m not convinced he is that much better than Struff overall.

Clearly Struff’s chances won’t come readily but he showed in his win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in Cincinnati that he is prepared to wait for his opportunities and when they do come along he can be ruthless. He was taken to the cleaners by Daniil Medvedev in the next round but who wasn’t that week? I don’t think this is much more than a 50:50 match so the odds against on Struff is where the value lies.

Women’s Betting

I’ll take just the one bet in the women’s draw as well and that comes in the night session where I think Coco Gauff can get the better of Timea Babos. To give credit to the Hungarian, she has been around for a while and will have seen off plenty of up and coming stars but Gauff is a different level to anything that has come through for a while and as such I’m with the American here.

Gauff isn’t just a power packed American like a number of women from that part of the world are. She is tennis smart. We saw that in the previous round when it wasn’t happening for her and she worked it out and changed things up and powered through. That is a special talent and it is that nous which can see her through with a little bit to spare.

Daily Accumulator

We still have Wednesday’s accumulator running and with the schedule all up and down we might see some strange stuff on Thursday so I’m going to leave an accumulator alone on Thursday and get back to it on Friday.
