The third round of the US Open begins on Friday which means that we have reached the stage where seeded players can meet in other in the singles draws. The doubles are getting up to speed too so we’re in for another excellent day of tennis out in New York.
It has been a hectic schedule for many of the players who will be on show on Friday as most of them had their second round game pushed back to Thursday. A lot of big names made it through though so there are some appealing looking matches on the card.
Day 4 Recap
It was all about the big names in the women’s draw tumbling out on Thursday with the Wimbledon champion Simona Halep and the Australian Open finalist Petra Kvitova both biting the dust. One big name who did make it through unscathed though was Naomi Osaka. She continued her title defence with a straight sets win. On the men’s side of things Rafael Nadal had a walkover while Daniil Medvedev came through in four sets and Alexander Zverev went the distance once again. There were easier wins for the likes of Denis Shapovalov, Nick Kyrgios and Gael Monfils.
Betting wise it was an up and down day. Jan-Lennard Struff passed up chances in two tiebreaks and went down in straight sets to John Isner but near parity was restored when Coco Gauff saw off Timea Babos in a match much better than their rankings suggested it would be. She sets up a mouth-watering clash with Naomi Osaka on Saturday.

Arthur Ashe Stadium
We get underway on Arthur Ashe Stadium with the men’s match for the second day in succession and it sees the number three seed Roger Federer going up against the only British man left in the singles draw in Dan Evans. The women’s match in the day session sees Serena Williams coming out to play. She takes on the Wimbledon quarter finalist Karolina Muchova in a match which could get tight if Serena allows it to.
The night session begins with two powerful and clean hitting Americans taking to the main stage when Madison Keys goes up against Sofia Kenin in a match where the ball is going to feel a lot of pain. Speaking of pain, Novak Djokovic is back on the night session to round off the day and all eyes will be on him to see how he is dealing with his shoulder issue. He meets another American in the form of Denis Kudla.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
It is the former finalist and number three seed this year in Karolina Pliskova that opens up the show on the second court on Friday. She meets the talented Tunisian player Ons Jabeur for a place in the second week of the tournament. The second match on show looks like a good one as the seeded pair of Maria Sakkari and Ash Barty go head-to-head in a good looking game. They are followed by Stan Wawrinka who faces off against the veteran Paolo Lorenzi who must surely be running on fumes after his exertions already in this tournament.
Two good Ukrainian players open up the night session when Elina Svitolina takes on Dayana Yastremska in what will be a good test for the latter as she continues to rise the rankings. Svitolina’s defence against Venus Williams in the previous round was spot on and will need to be again here. Cincinnati champion Daniil Medvedev finishes off the play when he meets the Queens winner Feliciano Lopez.
Grandstand
It looks like there will be a competitive men’s match to get the action underway out on the Grandstand Court when Alex de Minaur goes up against a Kei Nishikori whose love for this tournament is already shining through once again. They will be followed by the British number one Jo Konta in the women’s draw. She meets Shuai Zhang who is likely to test her a lot more than her opponent on Thursday did. It is another women’s match that follows them when Fiona Ferry takes on the impressive Chinese player Qiang Wang before the last match on the court sees the clean hitting Nikoloz Basilashvili taking on the big serving German player Dominik Koepfer.
Court 17
It is the doubles which gets things underway out on Court 17 but there are a pair of men’s singles matches to follow with former semi-finalist Pablo Carreno Busta going up against the Cincinnati finalist David Goffin in one of them before Grigor Dimitrov looks to continue to take advantage of the way his draw has opened up when he meets the Polish player Kamil Majchrzak for a place in the second week of the competition. A mixed doubles match rounds off the play on the lesser of the show courts.

Men’s Betting
I like three bets over the course of the day in the men’s draw. The first of those comes up first on Ashe where Dan Evans can push Roger Federer into a fourth set and potentially beyond. These two have met in straight sets matches in their previous two Grand Slam meetings but back in Melbourne at the start of the year they went to a couple of tiebreaks along the way. Evans is playing much better now and Federer perhaps not quite so therefore the fine margins involved in the Swiss’ 3-0 win that day might go the other way this time round. Evans is playing some good stuff at the minute and while I still expect Federer to get the job done I’m becoming less and less convinced of his liking for this Slam. I see this one going to a fourth set at the very least.
Pablo Carreno Busta is another player who is in good nick at the minute and while David Goffin offered up a decent run in Cincinnati that wasn’t completely as good as the tale it told because he had a walkover along the way and never met a top 16 player until the final in which he was soundly beaten. PCB isn’t a top 16 player either but he enjoys this tournament and he appears to be hitting the ball nicely and moving well too. Goffin is renowned for not liking the humid conditions that New York brings so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Belgian struggle a little here. At the prices there is enough value in Carreno Busta to merit a bet.
Another man who looks good value is Feliciano Lopez. He has played some nice stuff to see off Taylor Fritz and Yoshihito Nishioka so far this week and now he faces his toughest test in terms of rankings in Cincinnati champion Daniil Medvedev. I say his toughest test but it might not be because the Russian looked absolutely cream crackered in the previous round and admitted as much after the contest. He has a night session here so he will have the extra few hours to recover but he was barely moving at times against an ordinary opponent. Lopez is good enough to take advantage of that at a big price so while I’ll dabble in him winning I’ll have a stronger bet on the Spaniard with the 4.5 games given that tiebreaks are likely here if Medvedev has recovered sufficiently.
Women’s Betting
There isn’t a huge amount that I like in the women’s draw on Friday although I must admit I am tempted with the two outsiders in the night session matches but I’m already on Sofia Kenin outright and while I like Dayana Yastremska I do think the defensive qualities of Elina Svitolina might just win the day there. I’ll look elsewhere for a bet though.
That comes in the match between Maria Sakkari and Ash Barty where I feel the game line of 20.5 can be covered with a bit to spare. These two women went three sets in Cincinnati and Barty has already been taken to a third set here this week. Sakkari looks in good touch at the minute and I don’t see her laying down for anyone. The slower conditions on Armstrong might actually suit her a little more. That said, I can’t pick the winner but I do like over 20.5 games.
