The first round of the World Championship continues inside the Crucible Theatre on Tuesday when six more men get their campaigns underway while four players half way through their opening matches look to seal their spot in the second round.
Ronnie O’Sullivan and Judd Trump are among the men in action on the baize on Tuesday so we should be guaranteed quality throughout the course of the day. Two other former world champions are on show as well.
Monday Recap
Once again we had a winning bet on Monday. We actually had two of them if you include Shaun Murphy in the bet we placed on Sunday. He duly completed a whitewash over Luo Honghao to cover the handicap while Zhao Xintong won exactly the seven frames we needed him to before succumbing to Mark Selby. Elsewhere there was a win for John Higgins who overcame Mark Davis 10-7. In the two matches that finish on Tuesday, Ronnie O’Sullivan trails James Cahill 5-4 while Dave Gilbert holds a 6-3 lead on Joe Perry.
In Play Betting
I am going to have my first in play bet for the tournament here. Dave Gilbert looked flued up to the eyeballs in the first session against Joe Perry and had an insane amount of good fortune in building a 6-3 lead but I’m not convinced that tie is over just yet. Perry won three of the last five frames and if he settles down from the outset in this second session I fancy he can still come through. You would think if he is unwell, and all the signs are that he is, then the longer this goes the more Gilbert could struggle, especially having not won a match at the Crucible for so long. 3/1 on Perry has some legs.

Stuart Bingham vs Graeme Dott (Tuesday 10am & 7pm)
The battle of the former world champions gets the action underway on Tuesday when Stuart Bingham and Graeme Dott start their quests for a second world title when they meet for the right to face John Higgins in the last 16.
Bingham has had a wonderful season having won two titles and reaching the final in another and he may well be flying under the radar in this tournament. Dott hasn’t had a good campaign but this wouldn’t be the first time he has come here quiet and raced off with the title or had a deep tilt at shot at the trophy so we shouldn’t write him off. I sense Bingham will win this and I fancy he could do it a touch handily but that is only a hunch so I’m not betting. I’ll watch the first session and assess from there.
Judd Trump vs Thepchaiya Un-Nooh (Tuesday 2.30pm & Wednesday 10am)
Arguably the pick of the first round matches has centre stage on Tuesday afternoon when Judd Trump takes on the exciting Thai star Thepchaiya Un-Nooh for a place in the second round to take on Ding Junhui.
Both these men have scooped silverware on the season but this is the only pot either of them want and given the styles that they both have it is hard to see this one not appealing to the eye. Trump has reigned himself in a little in recent times but still likes to get the balls open and attack and that is exactly how Un-Nooh plays the game too.
The bet I like here is the 8/11 on Un-Nooh to make a century. He is a very heavy scorer who has made 15 tons on the season, five of which have come in his last three tournaments so he is clearly hitting the cue ball nicely. I expect the balls to be open throughout this match so the Thai will get chances to fill his boots and that price is too big on him to notch a three figure break.
Mark Allen vs Zhou Yuelong (Tuesday 7pm & Wednesday 2.30pm)
The final match to get underway on Tuesday is the one between Mark Allen and Zhou Yuelong who meet over the best-of-19 frames to determine who will face either Jack Lisowski or Ali Carter in the second round of the tournament.
This will be the first time these two have met in competitive play so there might be a little bit of feeling themselves out but the big thing for me is apart from a run to the quarter final of the Gibraltar Open where the field was terrible, Zhou hasn’t really done a lot this term. Admittedly he has run into Ronnie O’Sullivan in a couple of matches but even so he should have done better than he has.
Mark Allen has been the man of the season so far and although his form has tailed off a little since he won the Scottish Open he has had plenty of time to work on his game and I expect to see the best of him over the course of this tournament. With that in mind, and based on the fact we’ve seen a couple of the younger Chinese brigade really struggle so far, I’m expecting Allen to come through here relatively comfortably.
