2020-21 Premier League – Crystal Palace vs Newcastle Tips, TV and Betting Preview

Another exciting weekend in the Premier League gets underway on Friday evening when Newcastle United make the lengthy trip to the capital to take on Crystal Palace in a match both teams will be seeing as one they can win.

Both sides go into the contest off the back of disappointing defeats last time out so there will an urge in both camps to pick up the three points here and right the wrong of the last game, which should see a competitive game unfold.

Where to watch

With the Premier League now allowing all their broadcast partners the chance to show matches during the pandemic, this fixture will be screened live on Amazon Prime Video with the programme beginning at 7.30pm and the match kicking off at 8pm.

Crystal Palace

After such a positive result to go into the international break with, Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson will have been disappointed by what his side delivered coming out of it when they went down 1-0 to Burnley last week. That match was on Monday night so the former England boss will not have had as long as he would have liked to work on things and put it right. Simply put, Palace missed Wilfried Zaha in that match. The bad news is they will be without him here too.

The obvious thing to note about Crystal Palace this season is that they are not as tight at the back as they have been in the past. They have already conceded 13 goals in nine matches, although four of them came on a poor afternoon at Stamford Bridge. Nevertheless, for a side who doesn’t concede many goals as a rule that is a concern, especially when their struggles at the other end have shown no signs of going away.

Newcastle United

Overall I think it is fair to say that it has been a better start to the season for Newcastle United than we are used to seeing from them, but there is no getting away from the fact that they have been extremely disappointing in their last two matches. The first of those was on a Friday night at Southampton where to call them terrible on the night would be doing a disservice to the term terrible. They just looked clueless against Chelsea last week.

Newcastle really need to settle down and find some consistency soon. They also need to start entertaining a bit more as well. There is no excuses anymore as they have a genuine goalscorer in Callum Wilson and a number of exciting support players and creative talents in the side. It is about time they are given a licence to thrill a little rather than just be set up so deep that those players are rarely far enough up the pitch to be at their most effective.

Team News

Crystal Palace will continue to be without Wilfried Zaha who is still self-isolating. Luka Milivojevic has finished his isolation period but not his suspension so he will be missing as well. Christian Benteke will be pushing to start.

Newcastle United expect to have striker Callum Wilson back after he missed the match with Chelsea last week through injury. Jonjo Shelvey and Matt Ritchie are also in contention but there will be no Ryan Fraser for the Magpies here.

Betting

Bookmakers have this one priced up correctly I think. I don’t think you need to be the biggest genius in the world to accept that all things being equal this match is going to be a bit of a low scoring grind and given the inconsistencies of both sides picking a winner isn’t necessarily the easiest thing in the world either. That might actually be a sign that the draw is the best bet but I’m rarely a backer of the draw even in these tighter looking games.

I don’t really want a huge bet on this match but I am often a sucker for a certain bet when Crystal Palace play and that is Patrick van Aanholt to score anytime. He might actually get some joy here because the right side of defence is where Newcastle are weakest and his advancing natural instincts could well get him in position to find the net. The Dutch left-back scored the only goal in this fixture last season and at 7/1 he looks overpriced to score here too, particularly in the absence of Zaha.

Tips

Back P.van Aanholt to score anytime for a 1/10 stake at 8.00 with William Hill
