Another weekend of action in the Premier League gets underway on Saturday when half of the latest round of games are played out on a day which looks competitive but has a feel of the starter about it with the main course to come on Sunday.
As with all the Premier League matches at the minute all five matches are live through the various broadcasters so on what looks like another dodgy day weather wise why not sit back and enjoy another day of football on the couch!
Saturday’s fixtures are as follows: (UK kick off and TV in brackets)
Aston Villa vs Arsenal (12.30 – BT Sport 1)
Burnley vs Brighton and Hove Albion (15.00 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)
Newcastle United vs Southampton (15.00 – BT Sport 1)
Fulham vs West Ham United (17.30 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)
Manchester United vs Everton (20.00 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)

Preview
The action gets underway with two sides who will be looking for big second halves of the season to potentially secure a European campaign next term as Aston Villa host Arsenal in what should be a decent enough game. Then the focus turns to the bottom of the table where two sides with a bit in hand of the drop at the minute meet at Turf Moor when Burnley host Brighton and Hove Albion. While both sides have a gap at present, they will want to keep picking up points to maintain that. Newcastle United are in the same boat and they host a Southampton side who will be itching to put their midweek disaster behind them.
Fulham will watch those matches and hope there are dropped points from the sides above them in the table which they can take advantage of when they host fellow Londoners West Ham United in the penultimate game of the day. The Hammers are having such a good season that they will move fourth for a while with a win. A decent enough day of football concludes at Old Trafford where Manchester United have the chance to return level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table when they host an Everton side for whom a win will enhance their own European ambitions.
Betting
Although the turnover of players in the Premier League is nowhere near the same as in the Championship, I will still approach these games in an air of caution, not just because of the transfers but also because this is the fifth match in a couple of weeks for these sides so there is inevitably going to be an air of unpredictability about them in line with what we have seen in a similar period in the second tier earlier in the campaign. I’ll take one bet.
That is on over 2.5 goals in the match at St James’ Park where Newcastle United host Southampton. We all know what happened to Southampton in midweek and they will be expecting a response here and I would imagine they will come out and attack rather than let the pressure grow on a defence that will be short of confidence after shipping nine. Newcastle have visibly been a more attack minded side since Graeme Jones arrived, which doesn’t surprise me in the slightest, and they are likely to want to get at a team short on confidence defensively. One issue Saints are having is defensive injuries so Newcastle should go on the offensive here. The hosts are in the same boat with missing personnel though so I expect this to be more attacking, and as a result high scoring, than maybe we would normally expect.
