Preview
The action begins with a couple of matches where sides who showed a decent improvement last season take on teams who are expected to struggle over the course of this campaign as Leicester City host West Ham United and Southampton take on West Bromwich Albion. The next set of games follow a similar path as Arsenal look to get back to winning ways after their defeat to Liverpool on Monday night when they host Sheffield United who are yet to score a goal this term let alone pick up a point. Wolverhampton Wanderers are another team who are looking to put a hard defeat last week behind them when they host a Fulham side who have been dreadful defensively to date this season.
The last two matches are the high profile ones on the afternoon. The big match of the day is the penultimate once which comes from Old Trafford where Manchester United welcome former manager Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham Hotspur team. The last match of the weekend sees the champions Liverpool continuing their title defence. The make the journey to Birmingham to take on Aston Villa in a battle between two teams who currently hold 100% records for the campaign thus far.
Betting
When these fixtures were on the horizon I was expecting to be all over Wolverhampton Wanderers but I can’t be backing a side who have just got thumped 4-0 let alone one which lost by that score to West Ham. Fulham offer nothing to the party defensively and you’ve got to think that Wolves will have their own way in the attacking end of the pitch. Wolves haven’t looked as strong as we would normally expect from them defensively so far this season though which makes me think we’ll see goals at both ends here. Even if we don’t Wolves should score freely so I like the look of over 2.25 goals in this one.
The other bet I like is for Manchester United to beat Tottenham Hotspur. A lot has been made of United and their poor start to the season but I expect them to find their groove for a big match on home soil and if they do that they should have the beating of a Spurs side who have to be getting pretty heavy in the legs with this being their fourth match in the last eight or nine days or so. Mourinho put out a fairly strong side against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup and brought some big guns off the bench and it was the same in the Europa League on Thursday night too. I’m sure he’ll set his team up to be hard to beat here but you can only go to the well so often. I often think when a team managed by Mourinho has an excuse for not performing they use it and as long as United make no huge errors defensively I see them winning this one.
