2020-21 Sky Bet Championship – Barnsley vs Derby County Tips and Betting Preview

There is one match which has been rearranged in the Championship on Wednesday evening as a hugely in form Barnsley side host a Derby County team who have started to edge dangerously close to the relegation zone once again.

Unfortunately with this one being a rearranged game rather than a traditional slot match there is no television coverage of it although the game can be watched via Barnsley’s iFollow for £10 for anyone who wants to watch it.

Barnsley

Barnsley moved into the top six with their latest win on Saturday and now they have the chance to put a bit of gap between themselves and the chasing pack should they win here. It is now seven wins on the trot for the Tykes and nobody can even argue that they haven’t played anyone as among those outings were wins over Brentford and Stoke, two of the better sides at this level and who would have been expected to be above Barnsley at the start of the season.

Barnsley are actually undefeated in their last nine matches and have only conceded five goals in that time, two of which came in a creditable looking 2-2 draw with Cardiff so they have massively tightened up at the back without losing too much of their penetration going forward. January additions have helped with their attacking output and all of a sudden Barnsley are eyeing up a return to the Premier League.

Derby County

The season has started to have a few more bright spots than it originally had for Derby County but it still hasn’t really got going and an indifferent run has left them just six points above Rotherham in the relegation zone with the Yorkshire outfit having two games in hand of the Rams. Wayne Rooney has had an effect since he took over but he’s been there long enough that we now know they issues they face are not immediate fixes else he would have done it by now.

One of the big things holding Derby back is their away form having lost four of their last five on the road. Even the one they won in that time was at Wycombe when they needed a winner deep into injury time so that wasn’t the most convincing argument against their poor road form. A lack of goals is an issue as well as only three times in their last 13 matches have they scored more than once. Given who their manager is that might be the biggest surprise of all.

Team News

One reason why Barnsley are in such good form has been their ability to rotate their side without weakening it. Should that continue here then we could see Carlton Morris start up front for the Tykes possibly at the expense of Dominik Frieser.

Derby remain without key men in the form of David Marshall and Krystian Bielik but Poland international Kamil Jozwiak could be included in the starting XI. George Edmundson is another who is pushing for a starting place.

Betting

It is hard to go against Barnsley here. They are the form team in the division and currently have that wonderful combination of scoring a number of goals and not conceding them so their confidence should be sky high. Although they will start to feel pressure if they are in this position after the international break, their expectations will still currently be real enough that they can play with an ounce of freedom here, a luxury their opponents might not have.

Derby are starting to find the pressure come piling on them and defeat at Coventry at the weekend won’t have done anything to help them in that quest. Derby are not the best side on their travels and I don’t think that is a surprise because they are a footballing side and pitches in this division are not the best. This one certainly isn’t in great shape which plays into the hands of the home side so I’ll take Barnsley to extend their winning run.
