The Championship season gets underway on Friday night and before it does so we have a chance to get stuck into the top goalscorer market, one which we claimed the winner in last season and will be looking to do the same again this term.
The top two from last season are both Premier League players and so it will be interesting to see who comes out on top this term, with some very good forwards still in the division to ensure a competitive betting heat.

Market Leaders
Teemu Pukki took the Championship by storm two seasons ago and he is back to give it another crack although with Norwich City spending fairly big to sign Jordan Hugill I wonder if he is going to be the out and out main man that he was when they won the Championship in 2018. It might be that the Canaries are not convinced they can hang on to their leading marksman so that would be something of a concern for anyone backing him at 8/1.
Ivan Toney is the big money signing made by Brentford to replace Ollie Watkins and with Watkins finishing second in the goalscorer standings last season it makes sense that Toney is likely to follow suit. The spanner in the works could be if the creative element of the Bees unit – Said Benrahma – leaves the club and given that he wasn’t involved in the Carabao Cup tie to open up the season, there has to be movement in the works that could see such a development happening. Toney has scored goals wherever he has been but he is priced on his reputation at 9/1.
Lewis Grabban went well last season for Nottingham Forest but there wasn’t really an alternative to him in the central forward area so he saw plenty of game time. I still expect Grabban to be the number one at the City Ground but with Lyle Taylor having arrived it wouldn’t take a whole lot for the game time of Grabban to be eaten into. You don’t want to be backing players who are going to have to share their goals with others so that is a concern.
The aforementioned Lyle Taylor, previous Golden Boot winner Andre Gray and Jordan Hugill are all 20/1 to top score this season. The same words that applied to Grabban still apply to Taylor so he wouldn’t be for me and while Gray is the leading player in the betting for Watford, it remains to be seen if he is going to be their main man with the likes of Troy Deeney, Danny Welbeck and Glenn Murray all at the club. Hugill looks to be the second fiddle to Pukki so they all have holes in their make up.

Profile
If you look at the list of top scorers above, we don’t need to be on someone who is going to play for a promoted side which offers up a lot more options from a betting point of view. That said it stands to reason that the teams higher up the table are going to score more goals so in theory players for those clubs are going to be more likely to top score.
I think the thing to concentrate on is the need to be the main man. If we can be on a penalty taker as well then that is all the more sweet as he’ll get a few cheap goals in that manner. When you narrow it down using those trends the market is a little easier to manage.
Betting
Usually I like to go a couple of ways when I bet on this market but there isn’t anyone I like down the field really. To be fair to the bookies they have the main contenders covered and there isn’t really anyone of the promoted sides to look at in truth. Given that the three sides coming down all have plenty of options in their ranks there isn’t really an obvious pick like Mitrovic was last season so I’m going to take someone who was in the division last season and who is clearly the main forward at his club.
That is Karlan Grant who should improve for the more positive style that is likely to be employed at Huddersfield Town this season. Even though he was in a side that struggled to create anything last season and playing in a style that didn’t necessarily suit, he still banked 19 goals which was good enough to finish fourth in the scoring charts. A lot of the reason for that was because he was the penalty taker so with that box ticked that is very much a positive. I expect Huddersfield to be on the front foot and create a lot given that they are managed by a disciple of Marcelo Bielsa this term. Grant is a goalscorer and 25/1 looks a more than fair price on a man who finished fourth last year and where the top two aren’t in the competition this season.
