The midweek action in the Championship concludes on Wednesday night and while it has to be said the ridiculous schedule is now beginning to have a major impact on the quality we are seeing, there are six more matches and 12 teams battling it out for three valuable points.
You can watch all six matches behind the red button over the course of the evening but one of them is in front of it on the main channel on an evening where both ends of the table are in the spotlight as well as the logjam forming in the top half.
Wednesday’s fixtures are as follows: (7.45pm unless stated; UK TV in brackets)
Preston North End v Middlesbrough (7pm)
Barnsley v Wycombe Wanderers
Brentford v Derby County
Bristol City v Blackburn Rovers (Sky Main Event & Sky Football)
Norwich City v Nottingham Forest
Reading v Birmingham City

Preview
The televised match on the main channel sees two sides who are looking to propel themselves from just outside the play-offs into a sustained promotion push meeting at Ashton Gate as Bristol City meet Blackburn Rovers in what should be an entertaining match to watch. The highest ranked team in action on Wednesday are Norwich City, who will move back to the top of the table if they come out on top against a very average looking and underperforming Nottingham Forest side.
Reading look to have broken out of their slump prior to the international break and if Norwich City don’t win then the Royals have the chance to move to the top of the table when they play host to Birmingham City. A win there will put them top. Elsewhere Wayne Rooney will take his Derby County side to the capital to face Brentford while at the other end of the table Barnsley host Wycombe Wanderers. The early kick off comes from Deepdale where Preston North End take on Middlesbrough.
Betting
There are a few bets which tempt me over the course of the night, not least Middlesbrough and Reading but both are a little on the short side to me it has to be said, given that I am mindful that few sides are going to be at full strength at the minute with the schedule the way it is. That leaves me with one bet for the evening which comes in the match at Ashton Gate where Bristol City and Blackburn Rovers should be involved in an entertaining battle.
I like over 2.5 goals here. I’ve spoken regularly this season about how I really rate Blackburn and they are a very good outfit away from home where the likes of Adam Armstrong and Harvey Elliott get more space to do their work but they are not the tightest side in the world at the back which should keep Bristol City interested here. The Robins were bored into submission on Saturday but that won’t be the case here. Blackburn will come to play and should make it into a decent spectacle, one where the quality the two sides have in attacking areas can deliver over 2.5 goals.
