2020 Modus A Night at the Darts – Thursday 16th April Group 4 Tips and Betting Preview

We move into the second half of the second week of action in the Modus A Night at the Darts event on Thursday evening as five men once again battle it out at their homes to bring us a sporting fix during this period of lockdown.

The standard in this evening event has been of the highest quality so far and we are seeing some really good darts and competitive matches as a result. With three world champions on show on Thursday there is no reason to expect any difference here.

The Format

Each night from Monday to Saturday five men will battle it out in a round robin group with the overall champion being determined on Saturday May 2. Matches will see the players compete over the best of 9 legs with each of them at home in front of a webcam throwing at their own individual dartboards. Scores can be found on Dart Connect and the tournament will be streamed on the bookmaker live streaming consoles and for free on Dartslive.tv.

Wednesday Recap

It was Wessel Nijman who came out on top over the course of Wednesday evening courtesy of winning all four matches. His closest battle came against David Evans who missed a dart at double to take him out, and the young Dutchman never looked back after that. Scott Mitchell ran him closest with three wins from his four matches with Ritchie Edhouse, Martin Adams and David Evans all registering a single win.

That initial defeat to Nijman put paid to our bet on David Evans to win the group and annoyingly the match bet I said I fancied won as Martin Adams trounced Ritchie Edhouse. Hopefully we can begin to turn things around over the course of Thursday and beyond and still end the week close to level or slightly above.

Thursday Line Up

It is the turn of David Evans to sit out on Thursday night which means that Raymond van Barneveld comes in to join his two fellow world champions Martin Adams and Scott Mitchell to make this look like a sizzling night of darts. When you add into the mix the class of Wessel Nijman we have something really special. Ritchie Edhouse hasn’t exactly played badly this week but hasn’t been able to buy a double. He’ll be hoping that all changes over the course of Thursday night.

Outright Betting

I mentioned on Wednesday night that I wanted Raymond van Barneveld to be involved as I thought he was just bubbling to the boil nicely. He wasn’t on show but he is on Thursday and I’m going to put my money where my mouth is. Barneveld was looking decent enough on Tuesday to the extent that he won three of his four matches, losing to David Evans who isn’t around here.

I’ll only have a small stake on Barneveld because beating Wessel Nijman is no guarantee but they meet in the final match of the night and that could be a winner takes all clash by then. If it is we would be on Barneveld at 5/1 and while he would be the outsider in the contest, he wouldn’t be that much of one. Barney is worth a small investment.

Match Betting

It is Raymond van Barneveld I’m siding with more in the match betting department too. There are two matches in particular where I think he is nicely priced to do some damage and will back him in them accordingly. The first is the odds against on him to beat Scott Mitchell. Credit where it is due to Mitchell, he won three matches on Wednesday night so is warming to the task but he won them with averages of 102.17, 92.92 and 89.46, the latter two which aren’t going to scare Barneveld. These two played on Tuesday night and Barneveld won 5-2 and I like him at odds against to win again here.

Moving later into the night and I’m happy to be on Barney at 5/6 to beat Ritchie Edhouse. Edhouse has played 12 matches this week and only won two of them so the good lord only knows how some bookmakers have this as a pick ‘em. To be fair to Edhouse he has played a lot better than that but just can’t finish his dinner let alone a leg. The matches he has won, ironically against Wessel Nijman and David Evans, were when both averaged less than 90. Indeed Nijman was 2/21 on his doubles in that match and that isn’t happening again, so there was an element of fluke about them both. Barneveld will score enough to keep the heat on Edhouse and if it comes down to a war of finishing the Dutchman clearly has the edge. At 5/6 he’s my pick.
