2020 Modus Icons of Darts – Wednesday 20th May Group 3 Tips and Betting Preview

The third day of action in the Modus Icons of Darts event this week sees the first pool of players going back to their home oches to continue to keep us entertained throughout another lengthy week of lockdown.

This was a competitive pool on Monday, if a little on the low standard side of things, but with everyone having got their throwing arms in gear we should see a rise in what is on show over the course of the day.

The Format

Each day from Monday to Saturday seven players will battle it out for a daily title. There are two pools of players, one which plays on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the other which toe the oche on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Each day the seven players will play each other once over the best of seven legs with two points for a win. The daily winner is the player with the most points. If players are level on points it is determined on leg difference and then the record between the two. The entire event can be watched on various bookmaker websites, dartshop.tv or the Modus YouTube channel.

Tuesday Recap

We were treated to a really good day of darts on Tuesday, 10 of the 21 matches went to a deciding leg and the overall group title went right down to the final match where Andy Jenkins beat Mark Webster to seal the crown. He saw off Martin Adams by a couple of points with Jason Askew third courtesy of leg difference. Scott Mitchell finished his first outing this week with three wins to his name while there were a pair of victories for Darryl Fitton and Keelan Kay. Mark Webster brought up the rear with a solitary success.

After the near miss of Monday it was a perfect day for us betting wise on Tuesday as Jenkins landed the 4/1 punt to win the group which got all of the opening day losses back. We then built on that profit when Martin Adams did the business against Keelan Kay to ensure a profit of 11pts on the day and putting us nicely up for the week. We’ll aim to build on that over the course of Wednesday and beyond.

Wednesday Line Up

Ritchie Edhouse got the week off to a winning start and he will be looking to replicate that success over the course of the day on Wednesday. Boris Koltsov was deep in the mix on Monday but faltered late on. He is back for another tilt at the title hoping to finish off a bit better and land the daily crown. Fallon Sherrock keeps knocking at the door waiting for another group win to come her way. She will also be out for success on Wednesday.

Jarred Cole was disappointing by the high standards he has set over many of the Modus days of action on Monday. He has a chance to put that right here and he’ll be out to do so against the other three players who are Scott Marsh, who will hope to kick on after a disappointing debut, Jose Justicia who try as he might just can’t seem to find any consistency for himself, and Mike Warburton for whom the same can be said.

Outright Betting

I took Scott Marsh to win this group on Monday but he finished bottom of the table with just the one win, however his play deserved a lot more than that, and if you go a little deeper and looking into the stats properly he played a whole lot better than his one win suggested that he did. Three of his five defeats were 4-3 and amazingly he didn’t have the throw in any of those deciding legs, so if he can just get a bit better when he toes the oche for the bull he could automatically be better placed.

Only one player averaged more than Marsh over the course of Monday, only one player hit more 180s than his 10 and nobody had more ton plus finishes. You have to respect the likes of Boris Koltsov, Fallon Sherrock and Jarred Cole while Ritchie Edhouse could be a threat if he finds his doubles like he did on Monday but I’m not done with Marsh just yet. If he can just tidy up the odd loose dart and sort that issue out at throwing for the bull he could yet deliver at a double figure price, especially when there is natural improvement to come having tasted the setup and format.

Match Betting

I’ll attack Wednesday with three match bets. They all come in a batch just prior to the lunch break. First we have Scott Marsh taking on Mike Warburton and I like the Englishman in that battle. I won’t expand too much on what I’ve said above about Marsh. Mike Warburton looks capable of being a handy player but his doubling needs a serious amount of work it has to be said. He found the doubles with just 27% of the darts he threw at it on Monday and over seven leg races that is not going to win much. He did beat Marsh on Monday in a deciding leg where he had the throw but I believe there is a lot more to come from Marsh and if Warby keeps missing the doubles the English ace can take advantage.

In the next match I’m happy to take Ritchie Edhouse to cover a 1.5 leg handicap against Fallon Sherrock. He has done that in his two wins over Sherrock and although he has lost the other match to her, that was his final match of a day when he had the pressure of needing to win to be crowned the champion that day. Even then it was only in a deciding leg. The bare facts here is that score on score Edhouse is likely to outscore Sherrock in the main so if he hits his doubles relatively crisply he is going to be hard to beat. That is how it has proven to be in their last two meetings and may very well be again here.

I’ll then get involved in the match between Scott Marsh and Ritchie Edhouse where I’m pretty surprised that the 180 line between the two is only 2.5. Marsh covered that on his own in their meeting on Monday but Edhouse is a pretty decent scorer on and around the 60. He hit six 180s in total on Monday but a barrel load of 140s and given that he was playing for the first time in more than a week I expect him to be sharper on the scoring here. When Marsh gets his first dart at the bottom of the 60 he looks like he’s going to fill the bed every time. They only played five legs on Monday and this line covered. With the possibility of two more here and better scoring from Edhouse I like the over again.
