2020 WDF Remote Darts League – Semi-Finals Tips and Betting Preview

The league phase is done and it is now time to crown the champion of the inaugural Remote Darts League as the top four from the regular season battle it out for the title on Monday night. We have two semi-finals and the final in what should be a great session of darts.

Four men have shone throughout the first phase of the tournament and now over a longer course and with the pressure of the knockout stages upon them we are going to see just who the pick of this field really is.

The Format

The best of 12 leg league phase is behind us but in keeping with the setup of the PDC Premier League Darts we have two semi-finals over the best of 15 legs and then when they are done we will see the final which will be played over the best of 19 legs to determine our champion. The session begins slightly earlier at 9pm and while we’ll preview the semi-finals, time restrictions will mean we are unable to get stuck into the final.

Night Nine Recap

It was a night of one sided scorelines to round off the league phase, a night where everything went as was expected in the main. The performance of the night came from the man who ended up topping the table in James Richardson. He beat Darryl Fitton 7-3 with a 95 average and that was followed by the man who came second to him in the pile in Paul Hogan. He defeated John Walton by the same score before Jim Williams confirmed his semi-final spot with a 7-2 win over Dean Winstanley. There were then 7-3 wins for Gary Robson over Wes Newton and Tony O’Shea against Alan Norris.

We only had one bet on the final night of the league phase and it was a pretty comfortable winner as Gary Robson always looked like he was going to be too good for Wes Newton and so it proved. We needed him to win 7-4 or better and ‘Big Robbo’ got the job done 7-3 to cover that handicap and send us into the knockout stage with a winner.

Semi-Final 1

James Richardson vs Jim Williams

The opening semi-final sees James Richardson taking on Jim Williams in what is the pick of the two semi-finals. Richardson has been superb in the group stages and will be looking to back that up here, while Williams hasn’t delivered his best darts to date and now would be the ideal time for that to happen.

Richardson beat Williams 7-5 in a really good contest on Saturday night and I fancy he has the edge again here too. Richardson has been the best scorer in the tournament and bar from one match against Tony O’Shea his finishing has been of a different class too. Williams has had legs where he has looked superb but others where his scoring has deserted him and his finishing has left a little to be desired. The leg on leg consistency of Richardson puts pressure on the opposition and the man they call ‘Relentless’ can power into the final here.

Semi-Final 2

Paul Hogan vs Tony O’Shea

The second semi-final sees the men who finished second and third in the regular season meeting over the best of 15 legs as Paul Hogan takes on Tony O’Shea for the right to face the winner of the first semi-final in the title showdown later in the evening.

You have to go back to the opening night of the competition for the time these two met in the regular season, when they played out a decent 6-6 draw and I’m expecting a similarly close match here too. Both men have only lost one match in the league phase which suggests they are going to be hard to beat. Hogan is the better player of the two but he’s just started to miss a few too many doubles for comfort. O’Shea has visibly improved by the night and has admitted as much. The 8/11 on over 12.5 legs looks the way to play this. It is hard to see this being won any easier than 8-5.
