It is semi-final night at the World Grand Prix on Sunday as four men will go onto the stage inside the bio-secure behind closed doors setting at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry looking to book their place in the World Grand Prix final.
There is just the one seed remaining now after a week of shocks and surprises and it will be interesting to see if that is a trend that continues here or whether a little bit of normality can return now we are up to the best of seven sets.
Simon Whitlock vs Dirk van Duijvenbode
If you had said at the start of the week that the opening semi-final would have been between Simon Whitlock and Dirk van Duijvenbode you would have got some funny looks because one wasn’t due to be in the tournament and the other was the lowest ranked player in it but that is the last four clash we have.
Whitlock has been very impressive this week. He laboured a little against Mervyn King in the only true battle he has had in the tournament but his win over Michael van Gerwen was the standout performance. Van Duijvenbode took advantage of poor performances from his opponents in the first two rounds of the competition but he delivered his own magical display in the quarter final in thrashing Gary Anderson and he’ll be looking to replicate that here.
You can make obvious cases for both men in this semi-final and while Whitlock would appear a worthy favourite based on his experience as well as his demolition of MVG on Saturday, I don’t think this will be won easily by either man. I’m expecting a pretty close tussle so the best bet here has to be the even money on over 10.5 180s. If this one goes six sets, which it very well could, we don’t even need an average of a 180 per player per set. These two score heavier than that though so I’m expecting the over to land here.

Dave Chisnall vs Gerwyn Price
The second semi-final of the tournament sees the beaten finalist of last year looking to get back for another crack at the title in Dave Chisnall as he takes on a Gerwyn Price who is aiming to make the final of a tournament he has admitted he doesn’t like for the first time.
Chisnall has had to come through some real cliffhangers in the last couple of rounds, finding himself 2-0 down in both matches only to come through and win 3-2 having got stronger in each match as it has gone alone. Price has cruised through dropping just the one set and taking advantage of opponents who haven’t really been on top of their game. Price continues to struggle to get into the legs but he has probably been the most impressive player remaining when he has got in so if he can start pinning that first double he is going to be very hard to stop.
It is the 180s I like here too. These two are both class acts and I don’t expect there to be a huge amount between them even over seven sets. The line for the 180s here is one higher than it is for the first semi-final but again if there is six sets in this semi-final, and I expect there to be at least that, then we need an average of one 180 per player in each set. That is very much in the capabilities of these two men so the over looks a natural bet to me.
