The CONCACAF Gold Cup semi-finals take place out in America on Thursday evening when both matches take place one after the other in Texas on a night where we will find out which two teams will progress to compete in the final on Sunday.
We still have the heavyweight two from this region in the competition and they have avoided each other in the last four so it will be interesting to see if they both set up another final or whether one of the two dangerous outsiders storms the party.
Qatar vs USA (00.30)
The opening semi-final of the competition is a very intriguing affair as the invited team Qatar take on the tournament hosts USA for a place at Las Vegas. Both these sides have progressed through the draw nicely to set up a fascinating last four contest.
I think it is fair to say that these two have made it to this stage in different ways. Qatar have been free scoring but have conceded readily along the way whereas with the exception of their demolition of Martinique, USA have stuttered in front of goal but they have only conceded one goal in the competition so there is an intriguing blend of styles. The old adage is that defences win titles and championships and USA will hope that rings true here but Qatar aren’t going to change for anyone so this is an intriguing clash. I fancy this might be a Qatar type game though because if USA are going to take on Mexico they will want to have impressed in front of goal and give them something to think about. Qatar are perfectly capable of breaching this American defence so over 2.25 goals looks a more than fair runner to me.

Mexico vs Canada (03.00)
The second semi-final will see the defending champions Mexico taking on a Canada side who have improved a lot since the last Gold Cup and will now be eyeing up a place in the final of the competition to rubber stamp that.
Mexico took their time to get going in this competition but they laid down their credentials in the quarter final when they eased past a pretty solid Honduras side and the rest have got to be worried on the evidence of that. Canada will be confident themselves though. They have had a very strong campaign where they have largely scored for fun and if they can perform at their best they’re not without a chance in this semi-final. That is a big if though and all the logic suggests Mexico will win the match. I’m not so sure they are the certainties people and bookies make them out to be but at the same time I don’t really want to oppose them.
