The Modus leagues which entertained throughout lockdown last summer return on Monday with a new revamped competition called the Modus Online Live League, an event for players who didn’t earn a tour card to get some competitive practice for any minor tour tournaments that do take place.
The format is still a little sketchy but the main difference between this effort and those controversial leagues last summer are that all the players will be performing in a Covid-19 secure studio rather than their own homes via webcams and things.
The Format
We don’t know the full extent of the format yet. What we do know is that six players will toe the oche each day and play each other over the best of seven legs and go towards a league table. There is talk on the bigger darts forums that there will be a final of some sort each week but information for this event is a little light in forthcoming at the minute so we’ll have to play it by ear so to speak. The other thing we know is this event can be streamed with the major bookmaker sites or on the Online Darts YouTube channel.
Monday Line Up
Martin Adams headlines the action on Monday morning. He was a regular in the leagues last year and hopefully he will be this year too until the WDF gets up and running following the pandemic. Andy Jenkins is the next highest profile player on show on Monday. He was also a league regular last year and tried his hand at Q-School but failed to secure a tour card although he had a couple of decent days out. Richard North dropped off the PDC circuit at the end of last year and he is looking to revive his career here.
The other three players are all in the earlier phases of their career and tried to get on the tour at Q-School last month without succeeding. We saw all three in the Modus leagues last summer too. Arron Monk is probably best known and I’d imagine he’ll be up for playing well in this as his dad joins the competition at some point. Jarred Cole is the fifth player in the field on Monday and they are joined by the Welsh ace Justin Smith who had some good days in the leagues last summer.

Group Betting
As the days and weeks go on we’ll get stuck into the group betting and everything else as we did last summer as we wait for the full PDC circuit to come about but until we know how everything works and who the format suits and things, which hopefully we will find out on Monday, then it is best not to throw money at something that we are unsure about so we’ll come back to the group betting once we get into the event.
Match Betting
There are 15 matches over the course of the session and hopefully as we go along in these leagues and we get a clearer picture of how things work we’ll be able to make a fair amount of cash even allowing for the best of seven format and things. Although we have the fixtures we don’t know if there will be a bull up for the throw or if the first player listed has the advantage. There is a video on the Online Darts YouTube channel that likens this event to the Championship League the PDC used to run where like the Home Tour the throw was determined in the fixtures but all this is to be revealed.
There is one bet while we wait for everything to come to fruition and work out how it all works and stuff and that comes in the form of Jarred Cole to beat Richard North. These two actually met at Q-School last month when North won 6-2 but it was 2-2 at one stage before the former professional pulled clear but I suspect we might see a changing of the guard here. Cole is used to the Modus leagues and how they work and how aggressive you need to be and things while North can’t be feeling great having lost his pro status. If there is a bull up I still think Cole can win throwing second but if the fixtures are definitive Cole will have the throw here and can take advantage at odds against.
