The second day of action at the Scottish Open on Tuesday is first round matches all the way as we head towards the conclusion of the opening stage of the main draw in the third Home Nations event of the season in Llandudno.
We saw some big names make progress on Monday and some fall by the wayside and you get the feeling that is a trend which is going to continue throughout the week, which should make for some interesting action.
Morning Session
Stephen Maguire is the big name on show in the morning session on Tuesday. He came from 3-0 down in his qualifying round match on Monday to come through but doesn’t look like the player he can be. He’ll probably need to improve to see off Sunny Akani though. That match will be on the main table while over on the streamed table Tom Ford will look to make it through when he takes on Mark Davis. Two other matches take place in this morning session. They see Xiao Guodong facing Duane Jones and Robbie Williams meeting Lei Peifan.
Afternoon Session
As ever there are two sets of matches in the afternoon session and it is the world champion Mark Selby who continues his title defence in the first game on the TV table when he faces the competent challenge of Oliver Lines. Anthony McGill will be on the streamed table when he goes up against Chris Wakelin. Both the outside tables are also in use on Tuesday afternoon with Sanderson Lam meeting Ben Woollaston on one of them and then two young stars collide on the other as Pang Junxu meets Iulian Boiko.
The TV table in the second set of matches on Tuesday will be occupied by the UK Championship finalist Luca Brecel. He goes up against a Joe Perry who really needs some results soon in order to stay relevant in the rankings. Matt Selt beat Judd Trump last week and he begins his quest for this title with a clash against Andrew Higginson on the streamed table. The other two tables sees Jimmy Robertson meeting Lee Walker and Si Jiahui takes on Ben Hancorn.

Evening Session
Ronnie O’Sullivan is the headline act in the evening session and he’ll grace the TV table in the first set of matches when he takes on Michael Georgiou for a place in the last 32. Ryan Day won the Shootout last season and is on home soil here even though it is the Scottish Open. He goes up against Gao Yang looking to make the most of home advantage. The other two matches first up sees Scott Donaldson taking on Steven Hallworth and Stuart Carrington meeting Jamie Jones.
Kyren Wilson was quite vocal about not getting on the main TV table at the English Open but he’ll be on it on Tuesday evening when he concludes the session against Fergal O’Brien. Championship League winner Dave Gilbert will be on the streamed table when he faces Chang Bingyu while the outside tables have a good match on them when Gary Wilson goes up against Anthony Hamilton. Jackson Page faces Michael Judge in the other game.
Betting
I’ll go with the one bet on Tuesday with the aim of backing up the 5/2 winner we had on the opening day. Chris Wakelin isn’t quite that price to see off Anthony McGill but I do think he has every chance of beating a man who seems hell bent on making life a lot harder for himself than he needs to with his shot selection these days. I’ve never really felt that McGill is better over these sprint distances even though he won the Indian Open a few years ago and a lot of the reason for that is that he gets bogged down way too much.
If you look at the results of Wakelin this season they are nothing to write home about but he has lost in three deciders and then to John Higgins, Mark Selby and Judd Trump at the last three tournaments so he has either been close to winning or he has run into some truly horrendous draws. He doesn’t have a bad draw here so if he can get off to a decent start and get some confidence I think he could come past a McGill who only seems to play well in Sheffield these days.
