We have looked at who might win the US Open in our outright preview and now is the time to have a look at some of the other markets when we get stuck into the nationality, top finishes and other markets that have gone up for the Torrey Pines showpiece.
You get markets for almost everything in majors these days and after having had a good look through what is on offer there are three bets that I like the look of to supplement my six outright picks.
Top Italian
Three Italian players have made it into this event. They are Guido Migliozzi, Francesco Molinari and his brother Edoardo Molinari so basically one with plenty of major experience, another with a fair bit a while ago and a newcomer on the major scene.
As you would expect it is Francesco who is the favourite here but he has three missed cuts and a not much better than that effort in his four starts this year and in truth his game doesn’t look anything like it was when he was winning The Open at Carnoustie three years ago. That means I have this one between the other two. Migliozzi is a shot maker but he is very wayward which is why he needs to call on all his creativity to get back into position. That sort of style doesn’t work in US Opens else Phil Mickelson would have had five of them. That means I think Edoardo Molinari is worth a play here at 13/5. He is one of the best ball strikers on the European Tour and in his last four starts has offered up strokes gained tee to green rankings of 4-2-MC-1 – basically he is striking the ball brilliantly and there is a couple of top 10 finishes in that run. The last of those tournaments was at the European Open which was a monster course, much like this one will feel like for a short hitter, so that provide further encouragement that he can see off an out of form brother and a wayward Migliozzi.

Top South African
Nine South African players have made it into the tournament this week with two of them – Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel knowing what it takes to win a major while a couple of youngsters in Garrick Higgo and Wilco Nienaber will be hoping to announce themselves onto the scene here.
The other South Africans in the field are the good quality pair of Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Branden Grace, Erik van Rooyen who will have plenty of attention on him this week after he annihilated the tee marker at the last major, Dylan Frittelli and Thomas Aiken. Of those you can only really rule out Aiken around here as he isn’t long enough. I like Higgo though. He did me a turn last week when winning the Palmetto Championship and I mentioned he could be something special. The way he held himself together when everyone else was in hard reverse was impressive. He is 9/2 to win this market but he has all the length needed off the tee and as we saw last week the rest of his game is in good order. Oosthuizen is entitled to be hard to beat but Higgo looks like value to do it.
Top Englishman
There are plenty of English runners in the field this week such as Tyrrell Hatton, Paul Casey, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Justin Rose, Ian Poulter, Tommy Fleetwood and a whole lot more and they all have claims in this market, as do a few others, but I’m going to chance one at a decent price here.
That is Jordan Smith who looks to be finding some real form again after a period in the doldrums with his game. He goes into this tournament off the back of finishes of 17-3-11 but almost more importantly his strokes gained off the tee ranking was 21-1-3 and from tee to green it reads 9-7-13. Basically he is hitting it very well but not getting the rewards for that on the greens. You don’t have to be a good putter to go well in US Opens but you do need to hit the ball well. Smith has a top 10 in a major on his major debut at Quail Hollow so there is plenty of reason to think that he can get himself in and around the top Englishman places at 35/1.
