The quarter finals of the US Open begins at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday when the bottom half of both the singles draws plays out. The action from here on in is purely on the Arthur Ashe Stadium as far as the singles is concerned so each match gets top billing.
Day 8 Recap
It was a day of largely one-sided matches on Monday but there was still space for an absolute epic between Juan Martin del Potro and Dominic Thiem in which the former champion came from two sets down to win in five. Elsewhere there were easy wins for Rafael Nadal, Kaia Kanepi, Karolina Pliskova and Roger Federer.
With one bet in the night session to run we had a winner and two losers on Monday. The first women’s match covered the games line while Rafael Nadal and Andrey Rublev were too good for Aleksandr Dolgopolov and David Goffin.

Day Session
Pablo Carreno Busta vs Diego Schwartzman
The opener on Tuesday is a very interesting men’s quarter final between the solid Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta and the energetic Argentine star Diego Schwartzman. In many ways both men have come of age in this tournament and one of them will reach their first Grand Slam semi-final.
I think the sheer nature of what the match means to them both will dictate that this is a close match. You would think both men will be prepared to leave everything out on the court and if that is the case this could ignite into a bit of a classic.
I can’t quite make up my mind on this one. I think over 38.5 games will come in but there could be a huge number of service breaks in this so we might need five sets to get it covered. With Schwartzman’s leg playing up in the last round that is enough of a concern for me to leave this one.
Sloane Stephens vs Anastasija Sevastova
The women’s match in the day session will deliver us a surprise semi-finalist. I say a surprise semi-finalist and I mean that from a ranking point of view given that Jo Konta, Simona Halep and Maria Sharapova were all in this quarter.
If Sloane Stephens were to win this match it would be no surprise to our followers as we are on her at 10/1 for this match having backed her for the quarter. She has played very well to date and is a worthy favourite against Anastasija Sevastova especially with the Latvian having to get back up for a match after arguably her greatest win in the last round.
I’m hoping Stephens wins this obviously but this one looks to have three sets written all over it to me. Both women have gone the distance a couple of times in this tournament and given what it means to both I think they’ll do it again here. With that in mind I like over 21.5 games here.
Night Session
Venus Williams vs Petra Kvitova
The match of the quarter finals gets the night session underway when Petra Kvitova takes on Venus Williams in what has all the hallmarks of an absolute classic. Venus has this brilliant record in the slams to her name this year while Kvitova comes in off the back of one of the best performances she has displayed.
Both women have huge games. You would think consistency wise Kvitova probably has the edge but Venus keeps finding ways to win and that puts me off this one from a betting point of view. It is the sort of match that can be enjoyed without a bet and that is how I will play it.
Sam Querrey vs Kevin Anderson
American hopes of a Grand Slam finalist are getting high as Sam Querrey goes in search of one for the second Slam in a row. He faces Kevin Anderson for a place in the semi-final with plenty of power likely to be on show here.
I was surprised that the win over Mischa Zverev in the previous round was the first night session on Ashe that Querrey has had. I’m equally surprised this is the first time Anderson will ever have played on the court but despite their court inexperience I expect this to be a belter of a contest.
Anderson actually blew Querrey away in their previous meeting in Montreal last month but prior to that they met a round before this at Wimbledon which went five sets. I’m not saying for certain this will go five sets but I don’t see either winning in straights so over 40.5 games looks the way to play this. That line was safely covered with 47 games through four sets of their Wimbledon meeting and four sets should get it covered here.
