2018 Wimbledon Tennis – Day 3 Betting Preview

The second round of the singles draws begin at Wimbledon on Wednesday and as with the first two days we are set for blue skies and soaring temperatures to grace what should be a wonderful day of tennis in London.

There are some big names on show over the course of the day at SW19 with Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Marin Cilic and Caroline Wozniacki all looking to make it into the third round with wins across Wednesday’s action.

Day 2 Recap

Tuesday saw comfortable wins for a number of star players with Rafael Nadal, Juan Martin del Potro, Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic all coming through in straight sets on the men’s side of things while Simona Halep, Angelique Kerber and Garbine Muguruza powered their way through in the women’s draw. The big names were not infallible though with Maria Sharapova, Petra Kvitova, David Goffin and Dominic Thiem all sent packing in the first round.

It was a better day for us betting wise. Unfortunately Shuai Peng lost two tight sets to Sam Stosur but Frances Tiafoe controlled his match against Fernando Verdasco throughout to give us a small profit on the day.

Centre Court

A good match gets things going on Centre Court on Wednesday when Karolina Pliskova takes on Victoria Azarenka and then come the two legends of the competition. Roger Federer continues his title defence when he steps on court to face Lukas Lacko before Serena Williams looks to make it into the third round when she takes on Viktoriya Tomova.

Court 1

There are some good players gracing Court 1 on Wednesday afternoon too with the 2017 finalist and former champion Venus Williams opening the show. She faces Alexandra Dulgheru before a juicy looking clash as the Eastbourne winner Caroline Wozniacki takes on Ekaterina Makarova and then the play is rounded off by the other beaten finalist from last year Marin Cilic. He plays Guido Pella of Argentina.

Court 2

Another former finalist gets the show underway out on Court 2 on Wednesday when Milos Raonic faces John Millman before Agnieszka Radwanska faces the big serving Czech player Lucie Safarova. Kevin Anderson bids to make it into the third round when he takes on the veteran Andreas Seppi before Barbora Strycova goes up against Lesia Tsurenko in the final match of the day on this court.

Court 3

Britain’s Katie Swan made it into the second round and she gets the honour of starting play out on Court 3 when she faces the seeded Romanian player Mihaela Buzarnescu. The entertaining Gael Monfils follows them when he plays the Italian player Paolo Lorenzi. Another Italian is on show after them when Thomas Fabbiano faces Stan Wawrinka and then the final match of the day sees Mallorca champion Tatjana Maria going up against Kiki Mladenovic.

Best of the Rest

As ever at this stage of a Grand Slam if you have a ground pass or are watching the online streams of every court there are a number of good players on show on the smaller courts. It is big serving Americans all the way on Court 12 as Madison Keys, John Isner and Sam Querrey are all on show while Lucas Pouille and Kiki Bertens are on Court 18. Adrian Mannarino, Julia Goerges and Andrea Petkovic are also in action.

Men’s Betting

It is a couple of overs in the total games markets that interest me on Wednesday. There isn’t a lot of love in the markets for Andreas Seppi in his clash with Kevin Anderson which is slightly surprising, even though I think the South African will eventually come through but I don’t expect him to do so without a battle. These two met in this tournament last year when Anderson won in straight sets but Seppi appears in better form now and had a good first round win. I expect serve to dominate this one and I don’t see it being won in straight sets so over 38.5 games looks the way forward.

John Isner will be looking to come through his second round clash against Ruben Bemelmans and he is probably a worthy favourite to do so but he might not have it all his own way either against a talented Belgium who has shown a liking for lengthy matches here against big names in the past. With Isner’s return game still fairly weak if Bemelmans can nail a set then the over 39.5 games in this one should have no problem in landing. Isner should still win but Bemelmans kept close to Kevin Anderson and beat Daniil Medvedev in five here last year so he can push us past the 39.5 games mark before he succumbs.

Women’s Betting

There is just the one that I like in the women’s draw which is for the good form of Tatjana Maria to continue when she takes on Kiki Mladenovic. I’m actually a little bit surprised the French woman is favourite here. I can accept that Maria’s win in Mallorca last week went largely under the radar with all the focus and the powerhouses of the women’s game being on Eastbourne but she has already dumped Elina Svitolina out of this tournament.

Mladenovic has a decent game for grass but she is never someone I can bring myself to trust especially in the pressure situations and if this one was to get tight at any point or if it goes deep into a third set I expect the German to be the one playing the more reliable tennis. Mladenovic was taken the distance by the lowly ranked Anna Schmiedlova in the first round and can be put out of her misery here.
