The qualifying event for the Indian Open concludes on Thursday with the final set of matches taking place inside the Guild Hall in Preston. Those who are yet to compete for their places on the plane to India will do so on the second day of action.
We have four sessions of play across the day with some pretty big names playing off for the right to make it into the main event next month. That means we’ll be seeing the likes of Anthony McGill, Luca Brecel and Graeme Dott in action.
Morning Session
Michael Holt is the main player in this session and he is on one of the main tables. He takes on Chen Zifan while Kurt Maflin will be on the other one. He meets Eden Sharav. On the outside tables there are a couple of all-Asian clashes with Akani Songsermsawad taking on Mei Xi Wen while Lu Haotian faces Tian Pengfei on another table. Thepchaiya Un-Nooh meets Adam Duffy and the other match could take a while as Rory McLeod plays Rod Lawler.
Early Afternoon Session
It is the turn of Graeme Dott and Anthony Hamilton to be on the main tables in this second session of the day. Dott takes on Kishan Virani while Hamilton meets Farakh Ajaib. On the outside tables Yuan Sijun meets Hammad Miah while Mark Davis faces Sean O’Sullivan. Noppon Saengkham will go up against Paul Davison with the two remaining matches seeing Fergal O’Brien playing Dechawat Poomjaeng and Alexander Ursenbacher going up against Simon Lichtenberg.
Late Afternoon Session
Anthony McGill is the biggest name on show in the penultimate session of the qualifying event. He takes on Thor Chuan Leong on one of the main tables while Mark King meets Craig Steadman on the other one of the streamed tables. The outside tables will be full in this session too with Ian Burns playing Chen Feilong, Andrew Higginson taking on Harvey Chandler, Zhang Yong playing Fan Zhengyi, Jimmy Robertson going up against David Lilley and Allan Taylor facing Lee Walker.
Evening Session
David Gilbert is one of the main matches in this session. Annoyingly as we backed against him on Wednesday his match got delayed until this session. He takes on Niu Zhuang who is carrying our money while Luca Brecel meets Simon Bedfod on the other main table. Scott Donaldson faces Lukas Kleckers on an outside table with Ken Doherty meeting Sam Baird, Ricky Walden facing Zhao Xintong in a corker of a match, Chris Wakelin plays Jak Jones and Stuart Carrington goes up against Luo Honghao.

Betting
I’ll go with two bets to accompany the bet I have on Niu Zhuang. The first of those is Lu Haotian who I expect to kick on this season after making his debut in the World Championship at the end of last season. We saw the talent Haotian had in the Northern Ireland Trophy last year where he beat his opponent on Thursday, Tian Pengfei, in the quarter final. Pengfei isn’t pulling up any trees at the minute and with this format of the game being the best one for Haotian at the minute I expect the youngster to come through here.
I’ll also take Ken Doherty to knock off a Sam Baird who has only won one frame in his two matches this season. Baird is a talented player but it isn’t happening for him at the minute. He got his tour card back at q-school which is good but he is yet to take advantage of that. Doherty has had a quiet beginning to the campaign so I’m expecting him to be itching to get going again as he looks to build on an excellent season last time around. He showed last season that he can still play the game to a decent level and I think he can show that here.
