The opening day of the 2018 Ryder Cup was a topsy turvy one with America having the upper hand after the first session only for Europe to fight back and take control of the competition with an amazing afternoon run.
That has set up the second day of action wonderfully with America looking to respond and Europe looking to push on and ram home their advantage over the morning session of fourballs and afternoon foursomes. As with Friday time restrictions will deny us the chance of previewing the afternoon session but we’ll go through the morning matches.
Rory McIlroy & Sergio Garcia vs Tony Finau & Brooks Koepka
Match tees off at 07.10 BST
The opening match on the second day of the competition sees three major winners taking to the golf course when the European pair of Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia go up against the American duo of Tony Finau and Brooks Koepka.
Finau and Koepka teamed up for a win in the fourballs on Friday but to say they were fortunate would be something of an understatement with Finau picking up an insane amount of luck with his tee shot on 16 that was wet all the way only to hit the sleepers and drop to five feet. McIlroy was shocking in the fourballs on Friday but performed much better in the afternoon.
I’ve an inkling that the American duo will sneak this but there isn’t much margin in their likely size of victory or the odds so I’ll sit this out and hope I’m right as if I am my Finau outright punt will be looking in good shape.
Paul Casey & Tyrrell Hatton vs Dustin Johnson & Rickie Fowler
Match tees off at 07.25 BST
Two pairs who lined up in the morning fourballs on Friday are back out again on Saturday when the English pair of Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton take on the American duo of the world number one Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler.
Casey and Hatton were beaten on the opening day but they played some really nice golf. Johnson and Fowler were together in both rounds on Friday and they won the opening 18 hole match but were terrible in the second. In fairness they didn’t really beat much in the one they won.
I’m tempted by Casey and Hatton in this match but they look a little on the short side to me. As with the match above I have an outright bet on Casey so that can act as enough interest for me in this second clash.

Francesco Molinari & Tommy Fleetwood vs Tiger Woods & Patrick Reed
Match tees off at 07.40 BST
The third match of the morning is a repeat of the final match from Friday morning when The Open champion Francesco Molinari and European number one Tommy Fleetwood go up against the Tour Championship winner Tiger Woods and The Masters champion Patrick Reed.
The European pair dominated the match between these two partnerships on Friday and I’m not expecting much to change on Saturday either. Towards the end of the round on Friday, Woods looked like he couldn’t move with his back seemingly hampering him while Reed could scarcely find a fairway or a green all day.
I thought going into the tournament that Molinari would shine this weekend and that is exactly how it is panning out. He is getting good support from Tommy Fleetwood and I fully expect the duo to put their third European point on the board with another win here.
Jon Rahm & Ian Poulter vs Justin Thomas & Jordan Spieth
Match tees off at 07.55 BST
The final match of the session should be full of quality and plenty of passion as the big hitting Spaniard Jon Rahm teams up with Ian Poulter to take on the classy pair of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in what should be an absolute humdinger.
Thomas and Spieth played lights out golf in the fourballs on Friday morning and if they can match that on Saturday they will be tough to beat. I would give them the edge here based on that performance but you back against Poulter at the Ryder Cup at your peril. I’m in no rush to do that so I’ll sit this one out and take just the one bet on the day.
