2018 World Grand Prix Darts – Semi-Finals Betting Preview

We are down to the semi-final stage in the World Grand Prix and we have four of the best six players in the world of darts set to take to the CityWest Hotel stage on Friday night to battle it out for a place in Saturday’s final.

We finally got some drama in the tournament on Thursday night and hopefully the two semi-finals will follow their lead on Friday as the stars of the game come out looking to entertain over the best of seven sets.

Peter Wright vs Mensur Suljovic

The opening semi-final sees two men who have never made the final of this competition going at it for a place in their first title match in Dublin as the world number two Peter Wright takes on the World Matchplay finalist Mensur Suljovic.

You would think across this format these two are fairly evenly matched but they certainly are not in their recent meetings with Suljovic winning seven of their last eight matches, all of which were on the stage, which is a quite incredible record.

Wright has been much improved this week but we are yet to see the perfect game from him. Suljovic has been performing wonderfully all tournament and unless something bizarre happens I expect him to win this. He is the better double hitter of the two and that is everything in this competition. Suljovic for me.

Michael van Gerwen vs Daryl Gurney

The second semi-final of the competition sees the last two winners of the tournament colliding when Michael van Gerwen takes on the current, reigning and defending champion Daryl Gurney for a place in Saturday’s final. This match was expected to be MVG vs Gary Anderson but that script never made it to Gurney’s hotel room.

Van Gerwen has made it through without being opposed too much in the tournament and that might be a slight concern if this one turns into a battle. Gurney has had to survive a deciding set in an earlier round and then produced his best performance in the quarter final. He has the scoring power to lay it down to van Gerwen so we should be in for a cracking match here.

I’m expecting van Gerwen to win the match but he’s no price. Of more interest to me is Gurney hitting more than 5.5 180s. If this match were to go six sets he only needs one a set which he should be good for. If it only goes five then we just need a scoring burst from him. He hit five 180s in 12 legs on Thursday night and should get plenty more legs to find a sixth on Friday.
