We have reached week six of the NFL season and it begins in the Big Apple when the New York Giants host the champions Philadelphia Eagles in a big NFC East clash. None of the four teams in the division have begun the campaign well so already only the winners of the section are likely to make the postseason so neither of these can afford to lose.
Both these teams have losing records for the campaign so it goes without saying that another loss, especially one in the division, will be damaging for whoever it is that gets it. Battles between these two are competitive at the best of times but this one could be even more so.
New York Giants
When the Giants set out on their campaign they would have wanted a better start than one win from their opening five matches but when you consider that three of their four losses have been by one score they are not doing a whole lot wrong other than holding their nerve in the closing stages. If they can find an edge late on they could yet salvage their season.
The concerning thing would be that they have shipped more than 30 points in each of their last two matches although we should recognise that they have been up against a couple of pretty potent offenses in that time. They are a side not really suited to be featuring in shootouts so going forward their defensive strength does need to return.
Philadelphia Eagles
It is always hard to back up a successful season so it would have been wrong to expect massive things from the Philadelphia Eagles but even so I would imagine all concerned with the franchise will be disappointed that they have a losing record five matches into their title defence. What will be more of a concern is they have been pretty well beaten in the past two weeks.
Although it has been a slow start to the season for the champions you get the feeling that Carson Wentz is coming back to his best so it wouldn’t really be a surprise to see the Eagles going on a big run. They are one of the best defences against the run which allows them to control the time of possession which is often a determining factor in the outcome of matches.

Betting
This is that bit where I spout my usual stuff about the match outcome being tough to predict and bet on in these Thursday Night Football matches but it remains to be true. We saw that to an extent last week when the Colts offered nothing and there are various other examples of it so it is off to the side markets for a punt on the contest for me.
Eli Manning has thrown for over 300 yards in each of his last three outings against the Eagles and I’m expecting another big match from him on Thursday. I say that because it is almost impossible to get a ground game going against this Philadelphia defence so any yards the Giants do make is likely to come through the air. His passing yards line for this one is 259.5 and having covered that in three of his last four matches and only been 4.5 yards short in the other I’m happy to jump on the over.
