The UK Open comes to a close on Sunday with the tournament finishing from the quarter finals onwards on a busy day to conclude the competition. We are already guaranteed a new winner of the event with the champion surely being crowned amidst drama on the third day of action.
The quarter finals will be played out in the afternoon session ahead of the semi-finals and final in the evening. As always, time restraints will deny us the chance of previewing the second part of the day but we’ll tuck into the quarter finals.
Rob Cross vs Josh Payne
The opening quarter final sees the former champion of the world Rob Cross taking on a man who has been touted as having a big future for a while and has the chance to deliver on that billing over the course of Sunday, in Josh Payne.
Cross is beginning to look like the player we know he is but he was labouring for long periods against Cristo Reyes in the previous round and that should give Payne plenty of belief for this match. I can’t say I have a massive opinion about this one either way so I’m happy to watch and see how it plays out rather than bet on it.
Michael Smith vs Steve Beaton
The second match in the last eight sees the World Championship finalist Michael Smith looking to make it through to another televised semi-final when he goes up against Steve Beaton, who has taken care of some big names over the course of the weekend already.
I can see Beaton putting up a bit of a fight here and with Smith not being completely at full health this could become something of a danger clash for the Premier League ace but you would think Beaton’s form will return to normal at some point and if it is here then Smith should be fine. I’ll leave this alone too I think.

Simon Stevenson vs Gerwyn Price
Match three of the afternoon sees the surprise package of the tournament, Simon Stevenson, taking on the man who might well be the favourite to win it from here on in, in the form of the Welsh star Gerwyn Price.
Stevenson has had a dream run so far in the tournament but he only averaged 91 in his two matches on Saturday and neither of them were on the big stage. That sort of level won’t get the job done in this company on Sunday so I fear a little for him although he’s had a great week. Price is playing some superb darts at the minute and was averaging over a ton on Saturday. He should win this with plenty in hand.
Nathan Aspinall vs Ross Smith
World Championship semi-finalist Nathan Aspinall will go in search of a second successive TV semi when he takes on Ross Smith who enjoyed a fine win over James Wade on Saturday night and who shouldn’t be taken lightly on the face of that.
This has been a big weekend for Smith and another win or two would do the world of good to his ranking but he is not usually at this stage of events so it will be interesting to see how he handles the pressure and tension. I’m effectively on Aspinall at around 16/1 for this match having taken him outright before the event started and that is enough interest for me here.
