We have reached the last 16 stage of the International Championship out in China, with all of the matches being played over what look to be two juicy sessions of snooker in the biggest event of the campaign to date.
We’ve reached the stage of the event where the big names are beginning to play each other so we’ve already lost one or two, but the quality on show on Wednesday should be something to behold with some very good matches on the schedule.
Morning Session
We get underway with some great players on show on the main tables. The world champion Judd Trump is probably the headline act now and he faces the considerable test that is Joe Perry for a place in the quarter finals while on the other table the World Championship semi-finalist Dave Gilbert takes on Mark Selby, in a match which could be quite a watch given their scoring power and safety acumen.
The other losing World Championship semi-finalist is on one of the outside tables when Gary Wilson looks to continue his fine run of form when he takes on Jak Jones, who is quietly creeping through the draw this week. The other match in this morning session sees Tom Ford looking to build on his win over Kyren Wilson in the previous round when he takes on Andrew Higginson.
Afternoon Session
This is the session where the tables are absolutely loaded with talent. The two home stars meet on one of the main tables when Ding Junhui takes on Liang Wenbo. There are just starting to be a few signs of Ding warming to the task here so he’ll fancy his chances in that one while on the other TV table two former world champions meet when Neil Robertson battles it out with Shaun Murphy in what should be a cracking contest if both play their best stuff.
The two matches away from the cameras could easily be TV games in their own right. Mark Allen continues his defence of his title when he goes up against Ali Carter in a belter of a contest while the other match in the session sees the Scottish friends meeting when two more former world champions oppose each other as John Higgins takes on Graeme Dott for a place in the quarter finals.
Betting
There is only the one bet I like on the card on Wednesday and it comes in the morning session where I think Gary Wilson will end the run of Jak Jones in a bit of style. Wilson was playing some nice snooker in the lead up to this tournament, buoyed of course by his run to the last four in Sheffield at the end of last season, and rather than rest of that it appears that he is ready to kick on again and do some damage on the circuit. He showed at the Crucible that he has the game to be winning tournaments and it shouldn’t be long before he is threatening to do that.
Jones is clearly on the upward curve at the minute. This is the second tournament in succession that he has reached the last 16 and while he deserves credit for his wins over Mark Williams and Robert Milkins to make it this far, I fancy his run will come to an abrupt end given how well Wilson is playing. Usually I would steer clear of 2.5 handicaps but I think Wilson has the tools needed to cover that.
