2020 Modus A Night at the Darts – Monday 27th April Group 1 Tips and Betting Preview

We have a third week of the really good A Night at the Darts event brought to us by the Modus Darts team, with three players remaining from last week and three fresh ones joining in to keep us entertained throughout lockdown.

On Monday five players will battle it out from their own homes looking to put points on the board towards the overall table and attempt to come away on top of the pile for the night on what should be a good evening of arrers if previous ones are anything to go by.

The Format

Each night from Monday to Saturday five men will battle it out in a round robin group with the overall champion being determined on Saturday May 2. Matches will see the players compete over the best of 9 legs with each of them at home in front of a webcam throwing at their own individual dartboards. Scores can be found on Dart Connect and the tournament will be streamed on the bookmaker live streaming consoles and for free on Dartslive.tv.

Saturday Recap

With Fallon Sherrock on show as well it was an excellent night of darts on Saturday, one where Jason Askew signed off for a week off with success on the evening, although as expected it was Wessel Nijman who came out on top in the overall week table. Jason Askew beat David Evans in the final match of the night to come out in front in the group with Wessel Nijman just behind on leg difference. Boris Koltsov and Scott Mitchell bowed out of the event for the time being with a single win each.

We tried out luck in the 180s market in the match between Boris Koltsov and Wessel Nijman, but with the Dutchman having already secured top spot in the group he never really got going in the scoring department and that gave us next to no chance of the required four 180s landing. That dampened a good week of darts betting so there is room for improvement this week.

Monday Line Up

We have two players returning from last week that we know a lot about in the man who won three daily groups last week, Martin Adams, and David Evans who has more than shown his class so far in the times he has taken part in these events. They are joined by three relatively fresh faces for a week of darts.

I say relatively fresh because one of the players new to the tournament is Fallon Sherrock, the Queen of the Palace, who warmed up for the week ahead by taking on everyone in exhibition clashes on Saturday evening where she came out on top in two matches and only went down in a decider in another. That should have her primed to give a decent account of herself here.

Kyle McKinstry is well known to fans who watch the darts in the BDO side of the system. The Northern Irishman is a heavy scorer who played the Challenge Tour circuit last season, winning a title in September and he has already made a quarter final at that level this year. He also qualified for the UK Open and made it right the way through to the last 16 seeing off Fallon Sherrock and Martin Schindler along the way before a narrow defeat to Dimitri Van den Bergh. He’s entitled to go well here.

The other member of the quintet on show on Monday is one of the leading lights in the BDO/WDF system at the present time in Mike Warburton, a player who just last month won the Isle of Man Open title, beating a certain Martin Adams in the final of that event. He was a semi-finalist in the Winmau World Masters last year where he disposed of Scott Mitchell in that run, and looks well worth his place in this event.

Outright Betting

Later in the week when they have had a day or two to get accustomed to the setup and the event I expect to see Kyle McKinstry and Mike Warburton very competitive indeed in this but for now I think this group is about the three players who have had a taste of what this brings. I’m going to leave Fallon Sherrock out of things as she might need a day to find her feet after playing best of 7s on Saturday night while Martin Adams hasn’t played since Friday and last Monday he could only pick up one win.

I’m rarely a favourite backer when it comes to these group like things but I do think the 2/1 on David Evans to top the pile is decent enough value. He has all the necessary experience, is a heavy scorer and rarely goes that wrong on his finishing that he is a sitting duck for someone. He picked up 5-0 and 5-1 wins over Adams last week and three five 100+ averages and four more over 98 in his 21 matches. If he has that form with him here it should be enough to land the opening night.

Match Betting

I’ll go with one on the opening night of the week and that comes in the penultimate match of the night, which should be late enough for Kyle McKinstry to have worked things out and get stuck into Martin Adams. Wolfie showed last week that he can either be brilliantly consistent or very ordinary and there wasn’t a lot in between. I am expecting him to be better later in the week than he will be here.

McKinstry is a player I have liked for a long time and I’m a little surprised that he went so poorly at Q-School at the beginning of the season. He has gone well on the Challenge Tour and had that impressive run in the UK Open though which showcased his credentials and I’m expecting him to play a significant part this week. He’s a heavy scorer so if the doubles don’t let him down the 4/5 on him to beat Martin Adams looks a shade big. I’d have the Nortnern Irishman a slightly stronger favourite than that.
