2020 European Championship Darts – Semi-Finals Tips and Betting Preview

The final stages of the European Championship take place out in Germany on Sunday evening when the two semi-finals are followed by the final in what should be a great session to determine who wins the tournament and pockets the decent first prize.

We have two regular TV tournament winners on show and looking to add to their collection and there are two players who are in search of their first big title on an evening which offers plenty of intrigue and drama.

James Wade vs Devon Petersen

The opening semi-final of the two sees the former champion James Wade looking to get back to the final of the competition when he takes on one of the form men on the circuit in the last couple of months in the shape of the South African star Devon Petersen.

Petersen will be looking for a place in a first major final here and goes into the match as the favourite to win this semi-final which brings an interesting dynamic to proceedings as far as he is concerned. Wade is tried and tested at this stage of a tournament so it would be a major surprise if he doesn’t perform to something close to his best but whether Petersen can and does remains to be seen at this stage.

You can make a case for both men to come through here but the case for over 10.5 180s is an easier one to make not least because Petersen hit 10 of them in his win over Ian White on Saturday evening. That isn’t likely again here although the elevation in format means it isn’t impossible but Wade hits a lot more 180s these days anyway. I’m expecting this to be a pretty close semi-final so there should be more than enough legs to get 11 180s at the rate these men score at.

Peter Wright vs Jonny Clayton

The second semi-final sees the world champion Peter Wright looking to make it through to the final of this tournament for the first time when he takes on Jonny Clayton who is hoping to crown Sunday evening with his first televised tournament win.

Wright looked very good in his quarter final win over Steve West on Saturday evening and that looks even better when you consider he was backing up a big win over Gerwyn Price in the previous round and that West tried plenty of antics as well. He suggested in his interview after that match that there is more to come and if he is right the Welshman could be in trouble here. To be fair to Clayton, he played well in his first two matches but missed doubles came regularly in his quarter final. It goes without saying that he won’t be able to afford that here but in many ways he doesn’t have a lot to lose which could help him. I hope it does because I’m on him at 25/1 to win this match courtesy of taking him outright before the event began. That will do as my betting interest here.
