The final match of week nine of the NFL season comes from the MetLife Stadium when the currently winless New York Jets host their AFC East rivals New England Patriots in a Monday Night Football which probably looked much better when it was chosen than it does now.
These two have played 15 matches this season and have won a total of two between them so those expecting to see a wow of a game here might end up disappointed. It is primetime though so we might be surprised but it probably isn’t a good idea to expect too much from this one.
New York Jets
Nobody can dispute the consistency of the New York Jets but it isn’t a good consistency for them because they have played eight matches and lost the lot which isn’t what they wanted. They haven’t really looked good at any stage this season but in recent times they have been beyond bad. In their last three matches they have only managed a total of 19 points and only once this season have they put up more than 17 points in any one game.
Normally you would argue that when a number one quarterback is injured it would be a detriment to the side but even though Joe Flacco has been past it for a while, he’ll struggle to perform worse than Sam Darnold has been doing. It remains to be seen whether the Jets tank the season from here and look for another franchise quarterback with the number one pick in the draft but with the worst offense in football and one of the weaker defences it wouldn’t be the worst idea to write this campaign off.

New England Patriots
When they were 2-1 earlier in the season there were vibes that the New England Patriots were going to be more than functional without their quarterback Tom Brady but having lost their last four matches since then plenty of doubts are beginning to surface. We knew their defence was going to weaken because of the players who left in the off season but there were hopes that Cam Newton would come good and lead their offense to good things.
That hasn’t been the case. He has struggled massively in the passing game although his receiving options are nothing like the ones that Brady had. Even his running game has suffered although the ability to run the ball has been affected by them falling behind. There were signs of a real improvement against Buffalo last week but when it came to crossing the winning line they fluffed their lines which is a real concern.
Betting
There isn’t a whole lot that would surprise me in this match and in truth it is hard to get up for it from a betting point of view. The season overall would probably suggest that the New England Patriots will win the match but taking a side who have lost their last four matches to cover a double digit spread doesn’t really feel like a profitable strategy. The point line tempts me at 42.5 where I like the under but a couple of turnovers that go for six could put that under threat too.
The bet I like with all that in mind is for Cam Newton to score a touchdown. He is beginning to drink in the last chance saloon and if he can’t come up with the goods against this defence the calls that he is finished or not the player he once was will only grow louder. The Jets defence has already struggled to contain Kyler Murray and Patrick Mahomes this season and Newton is very much in that bracket so the 11/10 that the quarterback runs one in looks decent enough to me.
