The later part of the double header in the Caribbean Premier League on Tuesday sees two teams looking for their second win in the CPL 2021 season when the Jamaica Tallawahs take on the Barbados Royals for the second time in as many matches.
The Royals got their season up and running by beating Jamaica in the first match between the two over the weekend and will be looking to follow up and complete the double while the Tallawahs will be out for a bit of revenge.
Jamaica Tallawahs
You get the impression this is a key match in the campaign for the Jamaica Tallawahs. They do already have a win on the board but they didn’t really have to work very hard to achieve it. In the match which was competitive against the Royals, they weren’t really at the races and after a poor season last term, the Tallawahs certainly don’t need to go into their shell and start offering up indifferent performances once again.
The big issue for the Tallawahs last term was their batting. It was too reliant on a couple of players and one of the big problems they have here is that one of those players will be playing for the opposition. Even this early in the season, there is a feeling that Jamaica might be a little too reliant on Andre Russell, and as we saw in the previous match, if he doesn’t come off there isn’t a huge amount around him. That is something they need to put to bed by having a couple of other players step up to the plate and deliver.
Barbados Royals
The Barbados Royals have probably been a little bit better than their ledger would suggest so far. They have a win and two defeats on their record but in the two losses there were spells in each match where they were out in front and looking comfortable before things got away from them. Those came in their opening two matches so it was to their credit that they rebounded and won their third one because losing the first three games would mean it would be a long way back in terms of having a chance to qualify.
The ironic thing was that against the Tallawahs in their previous match the Royals were behind in the early stages but then turned things around nicely with a big partnership to finish their innings. The other thing they did well was maintain the pressure on the Tallawahs throughout the bowling innings and got their reward. If they play the full 40 overs more often then the former champions have every chance of being relevant this term.

Key Men
There are a lot of big hitters in this Jamaica Tallawahs side but not so many players who want to park their egos and knock the ball around and get them up to a half decent score so you get the impression someone like Chadwick Walton is going to be a decent player here. It is vital he gets in and offers someone for the other players to bat around.
This wicket didn’t play the easiest in the early match so Shai Hope could be a key player for the Barbados Tridents as he is the one most likely to give their bigger hitters someone to bat around. He has the class to deal with any conditions.
Betting
I’m a little surprised that the Barbados Royals are as big as 6/5 to win this match when you consider how comfortably they beat the Jamaica Tallawahs in the previous match. This doesn’t look like the easiest pitch to bat on, although there was a case of this with the first pitch which was used and then in the evening of the opening day it played fine, but the Royals would be fine if they pitch plays better than earlier in the day anyway.
I think if there are tricky conditions it will affect the Jamaica Tallawahs a lot more than it will the Royals. Jamaica have batsmen who need the ball to come onto the bat and have the confidence that the pitch will deliver to allow their power hitters to explode into life. I’m not convinced those are the conditions they are going to get here which will inconvenience them. I think all round Barbados are the better of the two sides so unless Andre Russell goes bonkers I think the value is very much with the Royals here.
