The second week of the US Open begins at Flushing Meadows in New York on Sunday when the first half of the last 16 matches are played out. That means we will know the first part of the quarter final line up at the end of the day.
With big names departing both singles draws over the course of the first week there are plenty of players who will be eyeing up still being here next weekend. This has been a very competitive tournament already and that is unlikely to change on Sunday.
Arthur Ashe Stadium
We have a good schedule on the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday and it gets underway with what could be a titanic clash between two of the best women players in the world as Elina Svitolina takes on Simona Halep for a spot in the quarter final. When they are done the sole remaining Brit in the men’s draw gets his chance in the big stadium when Dan Evans looks to find a way of disposing with the threat of the number two seed Daniil Medvedev.
The night sessions at the US Open have been very lively indeed this year and nothing is likely to change in that regard on Sunday evening especially with Monday being a bank holiday in America so the crowd can get fully involved. They’ll be heavily invested in the first match where Frances Tiafoe looks to get the better of Felix Auger-Aliassime before a very good looking women’s match takes to the court as the French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova goes up against the classy Garbine Muguruza.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
There are three singles matches on the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Sunday and there should be no shortage of excellent tennis among them. It is the men who get things underway on Sunday when Diego Schwartzman looks to make it to the quarter finals here once again when he takes on the rising star Botic van de Zandschulp. It is women all the way after that with the former champion Angelique Kerber next on court. She meets the woman who took care of Naomi Osaka in Laylah Fernandez before the number two seed will look to make her way into the last eight as Aryna Sabalenka takes on her former doubles partner Elise Mertens.

Grandstand
There is one other match on the schedule on Sunday and it is the only singles encounter over on the Grandstand. The match is not before 5pm local time so there should be a good atmosphere on the court to see the new Spanish sensation Carlos Alcaraz looking to back up his huge win over Stefanos Tsitsipas when he takes on the German qualifier Peter Gojowczyk with the winner earning a place in a maiden Grand Slam quarter final.
Betting
The first bet I like is in the men’s draw where Peter Gojowczyk has all the tools required to keep close order to a Carlos Alcaraz who is due to suffer from a bit of a comedown after the highs of that fantastic win over Stefanos Tsitsipas on Friday. That match lasted more than four hours and brought with it a lot of used up emotion energy so there is every chance that the Spaniard will be flat on a lesser court against a lesser opponent. The German has a big serve and that can serve him well in this match. I wouldn’t rule out a win for the more experienced player here but with the handicap sitting at 6.5 games there is no need to sweat on potential closing it out nerves. Instead we can just take Gojowczyk with the 6.5 game start.
Moving into the night session and there is a cracking women’s match on the card where the French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova takes on Garbine Muguruza for the second time in a matter of weeks after the Czech ace got the better of Muguruza in Cincinnati recently. That went to a third set and I wouldn’t be completely surprised if this one has plenty of distance in it as well but I fancy the value could be with the Spanish ace who comes into this fourth round clash battle hardened. She has seen off significant challenges in Donna Vekic, Andrea Petkovic and Victoria Azarenka. Krejcikova has cruised through a pretty routine so far but she’ll be challenged here and it will be interesting to see what she finds when she is. At odds against I’ll go with the player who we know can overcome the challenge in these conditions and that is Muguruza.
