Big Matches
There is so much on the line in the four TV matches that we can watch in the UK. The two from the Eastern Conference sees the number one seed and the final play-off spot on the line. CF Montreal head to DC United looking for a win which will secure them a first round bye and the top spot in the East if Philadelphia Union don’t win their match. The other TV game is basically a straight knockout for the last postseason berth as Orlando City host a Columbus Crew who are in if they avoid defeat.
Moving into the Western Conference and there are two spots in the postseason still to be filled. Four teams are in contention to fill them and they face each other. Real Salt Lake host the Portland Timbers with the home side having to win to be in while Portland just need to avoid defeat to extend their season. Minnesota United host Vancouver Whitecaps in the other one with the home side just needing to avoid defeat. Their season is over should they lose.
Best of the Rest
Despite them not being in any of the TV matches in the UK, Philadelphia Union are in control of their own destiny in the race for top spot in the Eastern Conference. If they beat Toronto FC then they will have next week off. Anything else leaves the door open for CF Montreal. FC Cincinnati might need something from their trip to DC United to confirm their participation in the play-offs. Over in the Western Conference, Los Angeles FC will celebrate their Supporters’ Shield success with a home match against Nashville SC, who will be looking to better the result of LA Galaxy when they go to Houston Dynamo in order to host a play-off game. The other games are dead rubbers apart from seedings in the postseason.
Betting
My eyes will be on the TV game between Real Salt Lake and Portland Timbers from a betting point of view on Sunday because this has all the makings of being one of those crazy MLS games which explodes into life. Real Salt Lake have to win this match so they know they have to score so it makes no sense for them to be anything but set up to be attacking in this game. The longer they leave it to get the goal they need the more desperate they will get.
Portland can’t just sit back and hope to keep a clean sheet. They only have one of them in their last 13 matches so you’ve got to think if they are going to get the point they need then they are going to need to find the back of the net themselves. The first goal here completely changes the dynamic of this match and with neither of these defences being overly convincing you have to think that they could both crack at certain points in the game. Over 3 goals looks a solid play here.
