We are nearing the end of the regular season in the SA20 competition and the penultimate match of it takes place on Monday when the Joburg Super Kings and the MI Cape Town conclude their main campaigns at the Bullring.
The Super Kings already know they will be in the semi-finals and a win here will confirm them in second position in the table. MI Cape Town know that a season in which they were the favourites to be crowned champions will come to an end here.
Joburg Super Kings
They haven’t been completely convincing this season but the Joburg Super Kings have made it through to the semi-final with a match to spare and with the final being at The Wanderers at the weekend there is still every chance that they claim the inaugural title on home soil. The Super Kings have won five of their eight completed matches but their net run rate of -0.636 tells a strong picture. When Joburg have been good they have been very good but when they have been bad they have been ruled over.
That net run rate is the world in the competition which shows how there is little depth to turn matches around when things are going wrong. Nevertheless, none of that matters now. They are two knockout wins away from the title but first they have to play a dead rubber and it will be interesting to see how they approach this. Their batting, Faf du Plessis aside, has been hit and miss all season so this feels like a good chance to send their strongest unit out and try to play them into form.
MI Cape Town
When you balance expectation alongside results this has been a very poor season for the MI Cape Town side. They were expected to stroll through all before them but the reality is that not only can they not make the semi-final with a match to spare but they are already guaranteed to finish bottom of the table whatever happens here. That can’t possibly be seen as anything but an abject failure and you would imagine that will be addressed ahead of next season.
There is no shortage of star talent in this side though and with no competitive pressure on it, it will be interesting to see if it can muster itself for one last big performance on a ground where in all honesty their batters could really have some fun. Their pace bowlers should enjoy the ball moving through the air quicker at altitude as well so while they have nothing to play for, a strong performance from MI Cape Town shouldn’t be ruled out completely.

Key Players
Reeza Hendricks has slowly started to find his form in this tournament and he looks like the man to propel the Joburg Super Kings should anything happen to Faf du Plessis, or if he is rested for what is a dead rubber for the home side.
Dewald Brevis launched this competition into life with a blistering innings on the opening night and he has the platform and the surroundings to finish his campaign on a similar note. The big hitting batter could do some serious damage on this ground.
Betting
This is another one of those matches which we have had in recent times where it is hard to get too involved because we don’t know how one of the teams is going to play it. We saw on Sunday that the Pretoria Capitals rested a number of players and duly got walloped in the process. That could happen here with the Joburg Super Kings, although unlike on Sunday, the MI Cape Town aren’t playing for anything either so this is a complete dead rubber.
There are South Africa spots to play for though and the likes of Grant Roelofsen and Dewald Brevis might want to take the chance to impress and force their way into the thinking for upcoming action for their country. When you throw in on top of that the likes of Rassie van der Dussen, Tim David, Sam Curran, Odean Smith and George Linde there is certainly no shortage of six hitting power on a ground where pretty much all of those can mishit the ball for six. This is a great chance for MI Cape Town to end on a high and against an attack which might save something in the tank for the semi-final, over 6.5 MI Cape Town sixes looks a perfectly possible outcome here.
