There is another double header of action in the Indian Premier League on Sunday and it begins in Ahmedabad when two of the top three in the IPL 2023 table meet as the Gujarat Titans host the Lucknow Super Giants.
Gujarat begin the day on top of the pile and they can open up a three point lead at the summit with a win. Lucknow will move up to second if they can come out of the contest with the win so there is a good incentive for both teams here.
Gujarat Titans
The Gujarat Titans were a little slow into full stride this season but they have won four of their last five matches, which would have been all five had they not slipped up in what looked like a manageable run chase against the Delhi Capitals. They put that straight behind them and thrashed the Rajasthan Royals in a repeat of the final from last season last time out and now they are beginning to look like a very daunting proposition again.
The big thing for the Titans is their bowlers have really come to the party. They have two of the top three wicket takers in the competition and that is stopping teams from getting away from them at either end of the innings. They also have a couple of batters who are starting to hit their better form which is making for a decent combination. I still hold one or two doubts over them when they are posting a score rather than defending one but they look the team to beat at this stage.
Lucknow Super Giants
The Lucknow Super Giants were going along nicely but have lost two of their last three completed matches and looked like they were on their way to losing the last one too but the rain arrived at the right time to save them defeat. The pitches in Lucknow certainly haven’t helped them and that has been an issue behind the drop off in form but now they have lost their captain and kingpin at the top of the order in KL Rahul, which is a bigger problem.
I think it is fair to say that the Super Giants batters will enjoy being away from Lucknow and on a pitch where the ball comes onto the bat a little better. The one thing that we know about the Lucknow side is that they have a vast depth of bowling options so whatever the conditions are that they face they can put out the right bowlers to take advantage of them. I would expect the best Super Giants display in a while here.

Key Players
Generally when the Lucknow Super Giants go well it is because their top order get away from teams so if Mohammad Shami can rip a pole or two in the powerplay that would go a long way to keeping the visitors in check and potentially winning the game.
On the flip side of that, if Kyle Mayers can get the Super Giants off to a flying start then it will allow Rashid Khan to be sat on and ride the overs at the other end in the quest for a winning score. His bowling could be useful as well.
Betting
With the exception of the last match, the games here in Ahmedabad have been high scoring and given the power in this Lucknow Super Giants batting I expect this one to be no different to that. The decision then is how to play the match and I think the best way to do it here is the runs because the likes of Rashid Khan and Ravi Bishnoi can dry up the boundaries for a few overs but teams are still happy to knock them for ones and twos.
The run line for this match is 332.5 which was covered in each of the first four matches here and although it wasn’t covered in the latest one that involved the Delhi Capitals so I’m not convinced we can use that too much as a form guide. Sometimes in these day games the pitches play tougher but the only day game on this ground saw both teams make 200. I’m convinced that the Lucknow batting will be much better for being away from home and the Gujarat batting is beginning to lock very good. I like the over here.
