The opening weekend of the Premier League 2023-24 season continues on Sunday with a double header in the top flight as four teams get their campaign underway as the attention very much turns to the capital.
As always on a Sunday both of the matches are live on the TV for us to enjoy and they look like being competitive matches with four teams wanting to prove themselves and show that they can enjoy better campaigns than last term.
Brentford vs Tottenham Hotspur (14.00 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)
The opening match of the two sees the first London derby of the season taking place at the Gtech where two sides look to show they can be competitive without their star strikers when Brentford take on Tottenham Hotspur.
Brentford will be without Ivan Toney for the remainder of 2023 and have a bit to prove in his absence while Spurs begin life without Harry Kane in this match and will be determined to show that they can move on in his absence. While the focus will be on the attackers in this match, the defences certainly have something to prove. Brentford no longer have the safety net of David Raya behind their defence and conceded freely throughout pre-season while Spurs still have plenty of questions to answer regarding their own defence. I don’t have as much concern about the forward lines in this one but I do the defences so I fancy we are going to see some goals here. Tottenham scored for fun in pre-season and Richarlison can lead the line in Kane’s absence. Brentford have a style which leads to scoring goals so I like over 2.5 goals in this one.

Chelsea vs Liverpool (16.30 – Sky Main Event & Sky Premier League)
The second match of the afternoon is probably the pick of the fixtures from the opening weekend of the campaign as Chelsea begin life under Mauricio Pochettino when they host a much changed Liverpool side.
It goes without saying that Chelsea will be looking for a much better campaign than the one they managed last term and Pochettino will be looking for a big performance and a positive result to begin his tenure with. Liverpool have undergone a transition in terms of players over the summer and now we get to see what should be a more athletic and exciting team for the first time. Both teams are still missing some important players though and you sense their recruitment isn’t completed and these two squads will look different in three weeks. Matches between these two tend to be very tight and cagey. The last four between them have ended goalless and while I wouldn’t expect this one to follow suit, there isn’t really a way in that I’m confident in so I’ll give this one a miss.
