We move into the second half of the matches in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday where another two games take place as the quarter final line up begins to get confirmed in the tournament out in Cameroon.
Among the teams on show on Tuesday are two of the African heavyweights. They face off against a couple of minnows who will be looking to pull off major upsets and make a rare appearance in the quarter finals.
Senegal vs Cape Verde (16.00 – Sky Main Event, Sky Premier League & Sky Football)
The opening match of the day sees a supposedly great Senegal side going up against one of the best third placed teams in Cape Verde, who have reached this level for the second time in their history but have never gone past this stage.
Senegal were one of the sides who were expected to dominate this tournament but to date we are still waiting for that to happen. Covid was a big hindrance in the early part of their campaign but they haven’t really got any better the longer it has gone on. The only goal they have scored is a dubious penalty deep into injury time in their opening match. They haven’t conceded a goal yet which is to their credit but you’d have expected a heck of a lot more of them offensively with the players they have. That might still come but I’d need to see it before I believe it. Cape Verde had a win, a defeat and a draw in their group campaign, the draw coming against Cameroon which is no bad result. If Senegal don’t start living up to their potential this could be a tricky assignment for them. I don’t want to back Senegal but I’m not sure opposing them is the right idea either.

Morocco vs Malawi (19.00 – Sky Premier League)
The second match of Tuesday has a bit of a David vs Goliath feel to it when the powerhouse of Morocco take on Malawi for a place in the quarter finals. Morocco are one of the most successful teams in Africa but they have only made the last eight once since 2004. Malawi have never been to the quarter finals before so this is a huge match.
Malawi have been one of the surprise packages in this tournament with a full house of a win, draw and a defeat in the group stage. The defeat was to Guinea which doesn’t look like a great result while the win was over Zimbabwe in a match they were second best in. Even the draw with Senegal doesn’t look particularly special right now. They do have a free shot at Morocco here but this is a Morocco side who remain unbeaten in 90 minutes in their last 32 matches. They have won 26 of them and are rightful favourites to win this one too. Up until their final group match Morocco hadn’t conceded a goal in the tournament and although they leaked two to Gabon I’m not convinced their heart was in that game as they had already won the group by that stage so I’m going to cut them some slack there. 20 of those 26 wins have been without conceding and barring something bizarre I expect this to be another of those. I just don’t see Malawi having much of the ball or carrying enough of an attacking threat to breakdown this stubborn Morocco side. I’ll take Morocco to win to nil.
