We have reached the round of 16 at the Western & Southern Open with all eight matches in the round being played at the ATP Cincinnati event on what looks to be an excellent day of action on Thursday.
In the main the leading players have all made it through to this part of the tournament which means that we have some really appealing matches on the schedule throughout the day session and into the night one.
Center Court
It is the day where we have three matches on the main court from the men’s draw and we begin after the one women’s match in the day session when Stefanos Tsitsipas takes on the marathon man in Hubert Hurkacz before the world number one Carlos Alcaraz goes in search of revenge against a Tommy Paul who knocked him out in Toronto last week. There is one match in the night session on Thursday and that sees Novak Djokovic continuing his American comeback when he takes on the energetic and entertaining Gael Monfils in a throwback clash.
Grandstand
Just the two matches will take place on the Grandstand as far as the ATP Tour event is concerned and those matches begin both sessions. The day session opener could be a spectacular contest as Alexander Zverev meets Daniil Medvedev while the night session will see the leading home light Taylor Fritz looking to make it through to another Masters 1000 event quarter final when he goes up against a Dusan Lajovic who surprisingly took care of the Toronto champion Jannik Sinner in the previous round.

Stadium 3
The other three men’s matches form the first three games over on Stadium 3 and we get underway with the lucky loser Alexei Popyrin taking on Emil Ruusuvuori in a clash which throws up a huge opportunity for both men. When they are done the same situation applies to Mackenzie McDonald and Adrian Mannarino who meet in the second game. The last of the matches on this court sees two men who beat seeded players in the previous round battling it out when Stan Wawrinka goes up against the much improved Max Purcell.
Betting
Although the schedule looks a cracking one, there isn’t actually too much that I like in the way of bets over the course of the day. One bet that I do think is a good thing though comes in the marquee match in the day session where Carlos Alcaraz continues what is becoming something of a rivalry against Tommy Paul, the man who has knocked him out of the Canadian Open in each of the last two renewals of that tournament.
Paul lost the other one in Miami earlier this year but he put up a decent fight there only going down in two close sets 64 64. Alcaraz just looks a little sluggish at the minute. Even in his first win here he was taken the distance by Jordan Thompson while Paul looks to be coming to the boil nicely after that run to the last eight in Toronto last week ahead of what he hopes will be a big couple of weeks in New York at the end of the month. I think this one has all the hallmarks of going the distance so I like over 21.5 games in this one.
