The quarter finals begin at the ATP Indian Wells competition on Wednesday when the two matches in the bottom half of the BNP Paribas Open draw get played out with semi-final spots on the line at the first Masters 1000 event of the year.
We’ve had plenty of surprises this week in the slower conditions but we still have four seeded players on show on what should be a decent day of tennis with both quarter finals on the main stadium court.
Cameron Norrie vs Frances Tiafoe
The opening quarter final of the week sees the 2021 champion Cameron Norrie looking to continue his brilliant record at Indian Wells when he goes up against one of two home men left in the tournament in Frances Tiafoe.
Norrie is the favourite for this quarter final and that looks fair enough based on the week we have seen so far. Norrie has taken care of the likes of Taro Daniel and Andrey Rublev and in the win over Rublev in particular he looked very good. Tiafoe is yet to meet a seeded player this week and while he has come through the draw pretty comfortably he is clearly up in class here against a Norrie who has been in a really good run coming into the desert. Tiafoe can be an awkward customer but the groundstrokes of Norrie look to be in wonderful order at the minute. I’d favour the Brit to come through but I respect Tiafoe on home soil so I’ll leave this one alone.

Daniil Medvedev vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina
The second quarter final sees a player experienced at this level of Masters 1000 tournaments taking on a less experienced campaigner this deep into an event of this kind as Daniil Medvedev takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
This is actually the first Masters 1000 quarter final away from Monte Carlo for Davidovich Fokina but as something of a clay specialist the slower conditions have been very much to his liking. The same can’t be said for Medvedev who has made no secret of the fact he has hated the slow conditions and who is appearing in his first quarter final here as a result. These two have met twice in the past, the latest of which came in Rotterdam just last month. Both matches were won by Medvedev but he was taken the distance in both of them. That match in Rotterdam would have been in conditions to suit the Russian but in much slower conditions I expect Davidovich Fokina to put up even more of a challenge. Medvedev might still find a way to win but the 4.5 game handicap start that the Spaniard gets is very much of interest to me here. He has battled hard this week to see off Karen Khachanov and Cristian Garin. Medvedev is a fit man but he was on court twice as long as Davidovich Fokina on Tuesday and that might be significant. Of more significance is the slow conditions which suit the Spaniard enough to stay close here if not win.
